I’m humbled to share that one of my recent storytellers has been published by Al Jazeera English.

This piece highlights the harsh struggles Afghan returnees face amid economic challenges and climate crises, stories that too often go unheard.

Photos: Afghan returnees struggle amid economic and climate crises

I met this beautiful baby girl at the Torkham crossing near Jalalabad. She is a forcibly returned migrant from Pakistan. The moment I saw her, her bright eyes pulled me in — full of wonder, confusion, and something unspoken. When I raised my camera, she shyly looked away, but when I smiled, she gifted me a soft, uncertain smile in return.She doesn’t know what’s happening to her family, where they’re going, or what lies ahead. I don’t know her name, but I know she’s from Helmand, from the Pashtun tribe — so I’ve named her “Muskan,” which means “smile” in Pashto. In the midst of displacement and uncertainty, her smile reminded me of the resilience and beauty that still flickers even in the hardest moments.Have you watched her gorgeous video?
