Mauritius: Although a haunt for pirates during the 17th and 18th centuries, Mauritius was isolated and uninhabited for thousands of years, allowing it to develop a unique flora and fauna and become one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Dubbed the “pearl of the ocean”, this pear-shaped tropical island lies some 800km east of Madagascar on a volcanic chain extending as far as the Seychelles, and is fringed with 160km of white sand beaches, azure-coloured waters and lush forests with backdrops of rugged peaks. Its almost four centuries of colonization by the Dutch, French and British along with its population of Indian, African, European and Chinese descent, have left the island-nation with a rich multicultural mosaic.

Fujairah, United Arab Emirates: In the easternmost part of the United Arab Emirates lies Fujairah, a rugged location with imposing mountain backdrops and unspoiled natural beauty. Detached from the rest of the country by the Al Hajar Mountain range and facing the Gulf of Oman, Fujairah is the fifth largest of the seven emirates that constitute the UAE. Unlike the rolling sand dunes, extensively developed coastline and sky-piercing highrises that are synonymous with sister emirates like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the scene here is vastly different. There is a far quainter vibe resulting from the absence of tourist hordes - travelers get to be amazed by some of the nation’s oldest mud-brick forts once home to ruling families and are surrounded by a landscape of craggy peaks, pockets of palm-tree dotted oases and pristine white sand beaches.

Cinque Terre, Italy: While everyone talks about Cinque Terre as if it is just one place, it is in fact made up of five incredibly picturesque little villages (hence the name, which translates to “Five Lands”). Stretching along the Italian Riveira coastline in the country's West, running from south to north are the villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Monterosso and Vernazza which are home to some 4,000 inhabitants. This area does however draw in an astonishing 2.4 million tourists per year, who travel to this now-listed National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site to see its beautiful but rugged landscape, terraced agricultural land and pretty pastel-coloured coastal towns that appear to rise from the Mediterranean Sea, each showcasing its perfectly preserved architecture and its own different character.

Amsterdam, Holland: One of Europe’s top short-break destinations and a good all-year-round travel choice, Amsterdam, or the Dam, as it’s affectionately called, is a hub for museum-lovers, gallery-goers, city explorers, and not to forget, cycling enthusiasts (the 22.5 million bicycles in the country far outnumber its 17 million population). Once the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company megacorporation, the city was one of the world’s greatest entrepôts brimming with spoils from Golden Age merchants and colonists. It’s along these same 200-year-old canals that we find the finely gabled, large-windowed townhouses that are so symbolic of Amsterdam. Other world-famous sights include the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, housing the most extensive collections of Rembrandt and Van Gogh. It’s an instantly likeable place dripping in charm and history.

Doha, Qatar: Like other urban metropoles in the Middle East, Doha shares a similar story, starting from humble beginnings with what used to be a small, slow-paced pearl-fishing village on the coast of the Persian Gulf. Areas that were once covered by vast patches of sand and arid land only a few decades ago now form part of an ever-growing futuristic cityscape of avant-garde architecture. But whilst the rush of modernity has brought about great change, the city still tries to maintain its old world hospitality and Arabic roots, evident in landmarks like the labyrinthine-like Souq Waqif. Its progressive attitude, passion for the arts, year-round sunshine, impeccable safety and cosmopolitan sophistication has allowed Doha to emerge as a world-class travel destination that is now gearing for the much anticipated 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Dubai, UAE: From a small, quaint fishing village with empty stretches of golden sand and once popular as a pearl diving spot, Dubai has emerged as one of the twenty-first century’s most dynamic, fast-moving and fascinating global cities that has commanded the world's attention time and time again. Its headline-grabbing mega-projects have on a number of occasions rewritten record books as evidenced by stunning developments such as the impressive Palm and World Islands both of which are visible from space, and the cloud-piercing Burj Khalifa, which can be seen from up to a remarkable 95 kilometers away (on haze-free days that is). And while this emirate may be known as an architect's playground, there is more intrigue beyond this glitz and glamour with culture and heritage also deeply rooted into the social fabric. This can be experienced when meandering its labyrinth-like souq precincts, when hopping on traditional abra boats and crossing the saltwater creek which for centuries has been frequented by merchant ships or, more remotely, when accessing the vast, evocative desert which saw nomadic camel-riding tribes cross this untamed land.

Vatican City, Vatican City: A walled enclave encircled by a 3 kilometer border with Italy and with the domed masterpiece that is St. Peter’s Basilica at its core, the Vatican City has many reasons that make it stand out. It is the world’s smallest sovereign state covering an area of about half a square kilometer, making it one-eighth the size of New York’s Central Park. It is also a religious powerhouse, once known as the Papal States, that is the home of the Catholic Church and the Holy See. Buildings monumental in religious importance are found here, like the Sistine Chapel, that house some of the world’s most celebrated artworks. The city-state only has around 600 citizens almost all of whom predominantly live abroad so practically everyone seen there is a foreigner working or touring for the day.

Rome, Italy: In ancient times, the Romans built extensive road networks spanning thousands of miles, with all roads leading to the capital of the world, Rome. Though the city may no longer hold that same status nowadays, it is still one of the world's most visited capitals, and there is little wonder why. For more than two and half millennia and with the help of Caesars, popes, artists, and common folk, it has stacked up an innumerable amount of evocative antiquities and monuments. These include everything from UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the grandiose Colosseum and Pantheon, extraordinary Renaissance and Baroque wonders seen in the architecture of buildings and adorning the walls and ceilings of churches, and cobbled streets leading to beguiling piazzas with beautifully sculpted fountains. And all this can pretty much be found around every corner, making the term 'open-air museum' so perfectly fitting. To top it all off, it's also among the warmest of the European capitals so how could it not be nicknamed the Eternal City.

Sri Lanka is a country blessed with cultural, historical and natural wealth and this is ubiquitously put on display in the country's southern region. It's along these honey-coloured beaches where the world-famous stilt fishing is practiced, while many spots across its sun-kissed coastline serve as perfect launch pads for whale watching. Beyond the seaside towns, the South is also the heart of the hill country, known for its lush rolling hills rich in tea plantations, cascading waterfalls, hiking trails and spectacular mountain ranges. Among the ranges lies the country's most sacred mountain, Adam's Peak. To top it all off, these lands are also blessed with verdant national parks bursting with wildlife, so animal encounters are guaranteed.

Mykonos, Greece: Recognised as one of the world’s greatest summer hotspots, Mykonos is Greece’s glamour island and most popular tourism destination. People the world round, from A-list celebrities and the superrich, to staycationing locals and even backpackers, flock to this Cycladic island beauty to enjoy its distinctive Myconian setting - sandy beaches, crystal-clear azure coloured waters, white-washed buildings, labyrinth-like alleys and thatched windmills. And its very likely that once you experience it, you'll be craving for more!

Floating Markets, Thailand: With the growing interest of tourists to Thailand’s floating markets, their overly popular appeal has turned these waterways into heaving tourist traps. And while this may hold true to some degree, these water-centric trading centers form part of the country's local history and way of life, and continue to maintain an allure. After all, meandering canals jammed with small rowing boats that are complete with built-in cooking stations and with vendors selling varieties of fruits and meals is a sight to behold. Love it or hate it, these world famous markets are a must see.

Bangkok, Thailand: Once a small trading post on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok has grown rapidly into a fast, steamy metropolis and has officially become the most visited city in the world. It may be infamous for its traffic-clogged streets, overly energetic pace and vibrant street life yet there are pockets of serenity to also be experienced. With Buddhism so firmly rooted in the lives of its people, hushed golden temples with prominent, ornate spires poking up into the sky are ubiquitously spread across Thailand’s capital, offering tranquil retreats amidst the hustle and bustle.
