Hey, that’s me! Fun to be the cover subject for the Guardian’s Ocean Photographer of the Year Awards. My friend Romain Barats took this snap of me in the middle of a socializing pod of s***m whales. With no camera in hand, all I had to do was swim around. Romain had a big camera to wrangle, light, depth and movement to consider. He is well deserving of the award! ***mwhales

A 150,000 lb southern right whale off the coast of Argentina this week. Southern right whales are one of the few “great whales” to reliably come into very shallow water. I love the challenge of filming and photographing them with the seafloor and surface in frame. Photographed under government permit.

Excited to see that Patrick and the Whale is nominated for the Emmy Award as the best nature documentary of the year. You can watch it anytime on Amazon Prime.

Separately, Earthsounds on AppleTV is nominated for the Cinematography Emmy. I was lucky enough to be one of the cinematographers on that awesome series.

So I could potentially lose two times this year!

I was nominated as part of the cinematography team for Episode One of the BBC’s Blue Planet 2 back in 2018 but didn’t win.

My mom and dad were so ashamed of me. Even the dog wouldn’t lick me for at least a week after that humbling loss. Can you imagine my fate if I lose TWICE in the same year!

Please pray to wherever you direct your prayers for me next month!

A neat encounter with a s***m whale calf the other day. This calf has no teeth yet, but bits of squid in its mouth.
Young s***m whales have been seen nursing for up 8 years, but calves under the age of one have also been recorded make full depth foraging dives to eat squid. It seems they are able to combine nursing and hunting for a large of part of their youth.
I was tempted to reach in and remove those little bits for him!

I find the eyes of whales so fascinating. You can tell there is so much wisdom in those eyes.

S***m whales live as long as humans live, about 70 to 80 years. Females spend that entire time with their family unit in matriarchal societies. Wisdom is passed down through the generations, perhaps for as long as 20 million years.

Given their huge, complex brains it is interesting to think about how much they may learn and retain from millenniums past and what the Earth was like over those vast time frames.

Happy World Whale Day! I spent it with one of my favorite whales, Dolores. Here she is playfully biting a calf in her family. We see s***m whales often with facial scars and assume that the scars are from squid, and they often are, but just as often the scars are from playful biting as shown here. Happy World Whale Day. Don’t bite anyone today!
