I knew when Austin Abrams asked me to help prepare him to star in Whalefall that it was going to be a really cool and important project.
Austin has had many big roles and the film has an all-star cast (Josh Brolin, Austin and others), a big budget and a well-known director. Millions of people will see the film and everyone involved wanted to make a great film, but also be as realistic as possible.
They were not setting out to make the “Jaws” version of a whale film or to demonize whales.
Before filming began Austin came down to Dominica and we got him in real s***m whales so he could feel their presence. He was a great sport and dedicated a lot of time to being as authentic in his role as possible.
Director Brian Duffield and the entire crew took great pains to be accurate in recreating the ocean environment, complete with an epic animatronic giant s***m whale, whale stomachs, squid tentacles and more. Big thanks to Brian, Austin and the team for getting me involved and on set and getting Austin in the ocean.
