'Of Trials & Tribulations'

We often compare overcoming challenges to a world on fire, broken relationships to burnt bridges, trials and tribulations to paths lit ablaze. But isn't fire the purest thing there is? It sees no good and no evil; consumes everything, pardons nothing. It takes the heaviest constructs and embellishments of our world and breaks them down to their lightest shapes, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. What if its only walking through the fire which terrifies you the most that will light away your aversions too? Will it leave you bare and true? Then, like Bukowski said, the only thing that matters in the end is how well you walk through the fire. So if you are burning, burn. If you can stand it, the fear won't make it through.
Picture from a Kandanar Kelan Theyyam performance in Kannur, Kerela. Easily one of the most challenging shoots I've shot and edited, starting with actually getting there. A thousand thanks again to those who helped and especially Chinthu and Smrithi for going out of their way to accomodate me. ❤ :)

Portrait of Dhoyoe in his classroom, head in the clouds, stars in his eyes. November, 2018
I have frames from this sitting that are sharper and in focus, but this was the one I could not look away from. Ansel Adams would probably not be proud, but perhaps the impressionist masters would grant me a pardon?

Taking a portrait of little Damchoe was an entertaining experience. No older than 8, him and his friends were full of energy and all kinds of mischief. He kept making me look away by pretending to talk to someone behind me, then when I'd turn back he had a little face on for the camera. Who said monks couldn't be mischievous? :)

PS: Yes, that's a Harry-Potter-esque scar hes got on his forehead. That's what I called him the whole time. :)

The Monastery, Tea & Serendipity

In the six months that I traveled through India, let's just say, a lot of plans went awry. My airline lost my baggage on my first day landing in Delhi, leaving me stranded at the airport. I missed my bus to Himachal & traffic to my stay took longer than my actual flight from Dubai did. But then there were the things that just worked out somehow, with no plan or process, as if by magical serendipity.. Like when a fellow traveler started telling me about a Buddhist monastery in town, me meeting Dhoyoe, his teeny monk friends, and them inviting me to stay for tea.. I extended my stay in Himachal to spend more time playing with the juniors and having long, candid conversations with a senior monk at the school. What about, you wonder? Animal welfare, technology today, Tibet, the government and of course, as you do with a wise Lama, life. Treasured memories..

Looking out at Kumbharwada

Urban life has always fascinated me with how easy it is to see drastically different lifestyles a mere kilometer from each other. The picture is from a the window in a potters studio in the slum-land looking towards the bustling skyscraper-friendly neighborhood of Mahim.
