When we visited Singapore earlier this year, I noticed small Mandarin or Orange trees in every place, and found out that oranges and other citrus fruits have a deep cultural significance in Chinese New Year celebrations, particularly in Singapore. Here are some reasons why they are popular:

Symbolism of Prosperity:

The word for “orange” (橙, chéng) sounds similar to the word for “success” (成, chéng) in Chinese. This phonetic similarity makes oranges a symbol of good fortune and success for the coming year.

Good Luck:

In Chinese culture, citrus fruits are associated with good luck. Their bright color and round shape are seen as auspicious, representing wealth and happiness.

Tradition of Gifting:

During the festive season, it is customary to exchange gifts, particularly between family and friends. Gifting oranges symbolizes sharing good fortune and blessings.

Cultural Practices:

Many families have traditions involving citrus fruits, such as placing them on altars or serving them during meals, reinforcing their role in celebrating the New Year.

Overall, the combination of symbolism, tradition, and cultural significance makes oranges and citrus fruits a cherished part of the Chinese New Year festivities in Singapore.

Do you know that the Supertrees are home to enclaves of unique and exotic ferns, vines, orchids and also a vast collection of bromeliads such as Tillandsia, amongst other plants. They are fitted with environmental technologies that mimic the ecological function of trees: photovoltaic cells that harness solar energy which can be used for some of the functions of the Supertrees (such as lighting), similar to how trees photosynthesize, and collection of rainwater for use in irrigation and fountain displays, similar to how trees absorb rainwater for growth.

The Supertrees also serve air intake and exhaust functions as part of the conservatories’ cooling systems.

Jewel Changi Airport’s HSBC Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and a major visitor attraction.
The nature-themed complex is filled with over 2,000 trees and palms and it is the first-ever Pokémon Center outside of Japan opened in Jewel.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum located in the Chinatown district of Singapore. It is claimed that the relic of Buddha from which it gains its name was found in a collapsed stupa.The size of the tooth – measuring 7.5 cm – is also far too long for a human tooth. The relic can be viewed by the public at the 4th floor of the temple.

Lau Pa Sat in Chinese it is Old Market, also known as Telok Ayer it is a historic building located within the Downtown Core in the Central Area of Singapore. The market remains one of the oldest Victorian structures in South-East Asia and one of the first structures built in pre-fabricated cast iron in Asia. It is also the only remaining market left that served the residents in the central district of early Singapore.
