THE SMALL BUSINESS COMPETITION (SBC)

K49,000 to Seven (7) people.

Every year, as a way of paying back to the community, we support a few people with business ideas, but lacking capital, to get kick-started. Last year, in order to support this initiative, K45,000 was awarded to fifteen (15) people through a business competition.

This year, seven (7) deserving people will be awarded with K49,000 (K7,000 each). This is meant to help these individuals start a small business or boost an already existing one. This will be done through a fair and transparent business competition. If you think you have a business idea needing K7,000 to start, then this opportunity is for you.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
1. Share this post now (this will be verified at the initial shortlisting stage).

2. In the comments section, state what you need the K7,000 for; Is it to start a new business or boost an already existing one? (this will also be verified).

Note: Don’t share your business idea or proposal in the comments section.

3. Using the link below complete the form and submit it no later than 7th November, 2025. No participation fee is required.

Where did the price control unit disappear to?

GROWING up, I remember hearing about a government department called the "Price Control Unit". It sounded like a big deal- a team that kept watch over the prices of essentials like mealie meal, sugar, cooking oil, and even housing.

This Unit ensured that things stayed affordable. But today, you have to ask, where did that Price Control Unit go? Because right now, it feels like prices are doing whatever they want.

A landlord can wake up, stretch, and decide rent has gone up by K500.... no explanation, no warning. You look around and see a basic self-contained apartment going for K3,500 in low density areas like Chalala. Is that normal? Is that fair? For many hardworking Zambians, these costs are not just unreasonable, they’re painful.

And it doesn’t stop at rent. Bread, mealie meal, transport, school fees, they’re all jumping up like they’re in a competition.

Meanwhile, salaries? Static. People’s income hasn’t followed the same trend, yet the cost of living keeps climbing like there’s no tomorrow.

Now, let’s be honest: markets need freedom to grow. We’re not saying the government should fix every price. But somewhere, there has to be a line -especially for essential goods and services. Because when the basics of life become unaffordable, dignity goes out the window.

That’s why it may be time for the government to consider reintroducing or reinforcing a Price Control or Regulatory Unit- not to micromanage the economy, but to make sure no one is taking advantage. A body that looks at inflation, cost of production, demand -and makes sure prices make sense for both businesses and consumers.

Affordable living should not be a luxury. It should be a right. We’re not asking for handouts. We’re asking for fairness. For balance. For a system that protects everyone- not just those with the power to set the price.
