ZAMBIA ATHLETICS TO INVESTIGATE ATHLETES’ CONCERNS
By Taonga Nk’homa
Zambia Athletics says it will investigate concerns raised by Olympic medallist Muzala Samukonga over athlete welfare, funding and logistical support.
Samukonga on Tuesday raised concerns on his social media platform, including claims that athletes have had to meet their own travel costs while representing Zambia on national duties.
In a statement, Zambia Athletics General Secretary Teddy Shimishi says travel and other logistical arrangements vary depending on the nature of competition, with some individual and professional events handled with the support of athletes’ agents or representatives.
He adds that the federation receives support from Government through the Ministry of Sport, the National Sports Council of Zambia and the National Olympic Committee of Zambia for various competitions.
However, Shimishi says the federation will thoroughly investigate the matter in line with its procedures and safeguarding policies, with a comprehensive report expected once the process is concluded.
