AIDAstella — Durban Departure.

I missed the ship’s arrival on Sunday thanks to Durban’s moody weather, but I made it in time to watch the AIDAstella depart in the late afternoon. With the inner harbour restricted to passengers only, I worked from outside the gates and then moved to Point Beach for a better angle.

My original plan to shoot from right next to the water didn’t work out — everything was fenced off — but I found a beautiful elevated spot at the end of the promenade. The timing was perfect. At 5 pm, the ship slowly eased away from the terminal and began turning toward the harbour mouth, catching the warm light as it moved.

AIDAstella is on a long repositioning journey from Majorca to Cape Town, so seeing it pass through Durban felt like catching a small chapter in a much bigger story. A floating city, pausing here just for a moment before continuing across the coastline.

A Wednesday Walk in Winston Park

Jan Smuts Avenue is a street that never looks the same twice. This weekend, I walked it again and noticed the first signs of seasonal change — new green leaves appearing where bare branches stood just weeks ago.

The crunch of leaves underfoot, the curve of the road, and the quiet beauty of this avenue made me pause and appreciate the small changes nature brings.

We caught some great action during the morning, parking at the beach right at the end of the runway of Virginia Airport during the Virginia Air Show.

During the afternoon, we moved to the sports ground of the Virginia United Football Club, from where I got some more shots of the action.

While taking these shots, little did I know of the sadness among those pilots of the Flying Puma Lions (in this photo), and the tragedy that was awaiting another one of their team members, Andre Blackwood-Murray, only four days later.

Andrew Blackwood-Murray's plane crashed just into the ocean, just off Battery Beach in Durban.

The 2025 Virginia Air Show left us with mixed emotions of excitement and sadness. During the show, the Flying Puma Lions performed a moving missing man formation in honour of Captain Laurie Raath. The show also featured breathtaking aerobatic displays, including Andrew Blackwood-Murray in his Nashua Extra EA-300LP. Andrew Blackwood-Murray was also a member of the Flying Puma Lions. Tragically, just days later, the aviation community mourned his sudden passing after a fatal crash off Durban’s coast, marking a deeply emotional week for South African air show enthusiasts.

Up in the Durban skies. The Puma Flying Lions Harvards putting on a breathtaking display at the Virginia Air Show. The roar of the engines, the loops, and the smoke trails had everyone on the edge of their seats!

There’s something magical about watching these vintage aircraft carve through the sky — a perfect mix of history, power, and artistry.

Would you watch from inside the airport with the crowds, or from the beach with a clear sky view?

A walk along Amanzimtoti’s shoreline always reveals hidden treasures.
From seashells shaped by the waves to tiny crabs sheltering in tidal pools, each detail tells a story of life along the coast.

This little crab reminded me how fragile — and fascinating — these ecosystems are. The shells scattered on the rocks are quiet reminders of the ocean’s constant movement, carrying traces of its past.

Next time you’re at the beach, pause and look closer. What small wonders will you find?

What a morning!

Last Saturday’s shoot gave us the best of both worlds — the calm magic of blue hour melting into the fiery glow of golden hour.
This moment, captured just as the sun arrived on the horizon, is a reminder of why I chase the early morning light with my camera.
