A summery evening getting soaked in the garden sprinklers, laughter, closeness, family.

Side-note: this fun crew has journeyed with me and had me journey with them through photos and my career for some time now 🥹 What a joy and gift it is to create memories with them and get to enjoy snapping away with the camera of this wonderful time together. It reminds me to savour and ‘document’ my own family with the same intentionality!

Toes in the sand, we watch as she appears at the top of the dunes we all know so well, walking with her loving parents towards her soon-to-be husband with the hand-embroidered artwork on his jacket, and the beaming band of friends and family who all feel so incredibly privileged and blessed to be part of this moment. All friends with cameras are tasked with bringing their camera and snapping along from their perspective, and what will come from this is the richest collection of wedding photos carrying so many layers of friendship and meaning.

I can go back to this string of memories as if it happened scarcely an hour ago, that’s how special it was.

A day celebrating golden people and their love for each other, for adventure, for nature, for people — a day painted into my memory now so I won’t forget.

My hair caught on fire at their wedding.

I’m not kidding 😂 I was so invested in the moment, so absorbed in the joy of these precious friends of mine committing their lives to each other that I didn’t even notice the candles I was standing way too close to (that, moments before, I had snapped a few shots of lol) and that had started to singe my hair.

At least it was after the ceremony and I didn’t cause much of a scene but goodness me I wanted to melt into the floor like one of the candles melting away! So much for blending in and being ‘the professional’…

I can be awkward and clumsy, but aren’t we all at times? And so I think realising that your photographer is human too can be a reminder that you can just be yourself in front of their lens. We’re not pretending here, we’re all people trying to figure things out, making mistakes. So I’m reminding myself to have a good laugh when something funny and unexpected happens to me. I’m learning to embrace the unexpected and not take myself so seriously. I have way more fun and delightful stories from that! Best believe I will steer clear of candles behind me in future, but I suppose now I can literally say, Lorinda and Kelvin, your wedding was fire 😅

One of the most unexpected plot twists, ever.

When a precious friend unexpectedly meets the person that is just so right for them, when it felt like that would never happen, it’s just so clear that God works in plot twists. And it’s often not a big moment, but a gentle unfolding of a story that doesn’t feel like anything at the start and suddenly you look back and think, wow. I did not see that coming!

And the best stories are like that.

My sister and her husband didn’t want a photographer on their wedding day but of course some of us convinced them to allow our cameras to join the fun 😉

I love that we captured their ceremony completely on film, and they kicked off their shoes the moment they walked out (more like ran out) as we tossed confetti flowers and leaves over them.

We had the ceremony in a milk shed that all the guests hurriedly transformed into the ceremony venue when it started raining as everyone arrived for the ‘garden’ wedding set up outside 😂

Their wedding speech was a simple “thank you” while everyone enjoyed canapés and coffee on the lawn of their friends’ farm, and we were blessed with warm May sunlight as the skies opened during the ceremony.

She also made her own dress, and wore the veil she made for me for my wedding.

I had some issues with my camera that day and so some of the shots had light leaks but that made it all the more fitting to this day of unexpected golden moments.

It doesn’t get more authentic and unpretentious and true to who they are and I am so here for all of this!

I forget how delightful this place we live in can be, and how lovely the people we meet here.

Here’s to a summery autumn afternoon with David + Meriegin as the sun dipped behind the dunes and painted sky blue, blue, blue and the grasses a soft, warm green.
