Saul Leiter once said "There are the things that are out in the open, and there are the things that are hidden. The real world has more to do with what is hidden."
This qoute stands out to me, Saul Leiter has been such a huge influence on every creative output I have and I aspire to have his influence noticed in my work. We live in a time where self-obsession and image are praised, regardless of whether or not this is a good or bad thing a lot of the time I don't think we pay attention to what is hidden, what is underneath the surface, what is vulnerable.
I admire Saul Leiter as a photographer because although he was a brilliant photograpger, he never claimed to be and he didn't want to be noticed although he seemed to be extremely observant. As a photographer myself who is trying to be noticed and trying to step into that limelight often, Saul's work has encouraged me often to just slow down and observe.
The 'real world' that Saul mentions is suggested to be hidden, how incredible must it be to find it? The photo attached to this post was one I took in Aarhus, Denmark. A beautiful city with people I felt so detached to but also so surrounded by. I encourage you to carry on chasing those ambitions and dreams but every once in awhile observe the real, hidden world.
