Posted • Mass-produced in Asia, the checkered polypropylene bag became loaded with meaning in West Africa during the 1980s, when it carried the belongings of Ghanaians expelled from Nigeria.

Nicknamed ‘Ghana Must Go,’ it evolved from utilitarian object to cultural symbol. Paris runways later reimagined it — Louis Vuitton, Céline, Balenciaga — reworking the market bag into luxury pieces that blurred utility and high fashion.

Today, African designers reclaim its form and pattern, transforming a vessel of migration into a canvas of identity, resilience, and innovation. From market to runway, from exile to archive, Ghana Must Go remains one of design’s most powerful stories.
