★ ECLIPSE SUNFLOWERS ★
Heatwave outside. A/C, fan and ice packs inside. If I can’t go outside, I’ll bring the outside in.

Sunflowers felt right for eclipse season, they’re one of the classic symbols tied to it. So I picked one subject and let myself play.

No pressure to get it “right.” Just different styles, different methods, seeing what feels like me. Flow over perfection.

Plot twist: oil pastels joined the party. Verdict? Beautiful, but too much grip and pressure for my fingers right now. Benched for a calmer day.

Turns out picking one subject and trying four approaches teaches you more than picking four subjects and trying one each.

★ GOLDEN HOUR ON THE HILL ★
There is always beauty to be found on this hill, no matter the hour.
I come here for evening chats with a friend.
To sit by myself and people watch as they take in the view.
It’s a place of solace for me on many an occasion.
And golden hour always delights. Every angle brings a different moment of magic.
Which one are you drawn to most?

★ LOOSENING UP ★
I keep being drawn back to abstracts, to mark making. Being playful and curious to see where this all goes.
The perfectionist voice is still there, but I’m trying to reassure her that wonky lines and random marks is perfect in its imperfections.
So I’ll keep working on her, on me, on these and see where they take me.

★ OLD MARKS ★
This is from 2020, showing how I’ve been doodling and using these marks for a while.
When I was back in South Africa and going through old journals, school and university notes, I found so many of these little doodles scribbled in the margins or on random scraps of paper.
I guess drawing, doodling, playing with marks has always been a way of calming my system down, regulating or a type of meditation.
I like this part of me.
I’m embracing her more and more.

★ A WALK IN THE WOODS ★
The pain in my hands means I can’t paint as much as I’d like. Sometimes I paint through it anyway, because I know the only way to get better is to keep going.

The pain in my feet means I can’t always go out for walks, hearing the birds singing between the branches and the wind dancing through the leaves. So I painted these instead.

I’m sharing some of my rough drafts, the ones I don’t feel confident about or love yet.

I’m showing up for future me, even if I’m slow and imperfect. Showing up so she can see I believed in her the whole time.

When old poems are still relevant today.
Recognising patterns.
Leaning on tools.
Trusting myself.
Knowing nothing stays the same therefore change is always on the way.
