Real Estate Hack: Why Pay Rent When You Can Be a Squatter? 🦉🏠

Ever feel like your kids are literally living on top of you? Well, spare a thought for this Barn Owl mom, who has officially mastered the art of "Strategic Relocation."
As a photographer, I’ve seen some pretty cool nests, but this one takes the cake (or the mouse 🐭). This isn't just any hole in a tree; this family has moved into a luxury, multi-story penthouse suite built by Sociable Weavers.
For those who don’t know, Sociable Weavers are the master architects of the bird world. They build these massive, thatched-roof "apartment blocks" in Southern Africa that can house hundreds of birds and stay cool in the heat and warm in the chill.
The Barn Owl’s logic?
It’s insulated. 🔥❄️
It’s structurally sound. 🏗️
The neighbors (the weavers) are noisy, but they make for great "room service" if you’re not picky about who’s on the menu. (Dark? Maybe. Efficient? Absolutely.)
Look at her face in the second photo —that is the universal expression of a mother who hasn’t slept since the late Jurassic period and just realized the kids are already asking what’s for dinner. "It’s 4 PM, Peter. We’re nocturnal. Go back to sleep." 💤
Naturalist Fact of the Day: While Barn Owls are usually "hole-nesters," they are total opportunists. They’ll happily take over a vacant (or occupied) chamber in a weaver nest because the thermal regulation is better than any AC system humans have ever designed.
Photography Tip: To get this shot without disturbing the peace, I had to stay further back than a shy person at a high school reunion. Long lenses and patience are the only way to capture that "judgmental owl stare" in its natural habitat. 📸

🌸✨ Daily Garden Guests ✨🌸
Every day, a dazzling breeding pair of Amethyst Sunbirds graces my garden, drawn by the sweet nectar of the pincushion shrub 🍯🪻
Their shimmering plumage flashes violet and emerald in the sun — an absolute joy to photograph! 📸💜💚

💡 Did you know?
🌿 The male Amethyst Sunbird glows with iridescent purple when sunlight hits just right.
🌸 They’re vital pollinators, using their curved beaks to sip nectar while spreading pollen.
👩‍❤️‍👨 Pairs often stay together during breeding season and can get quite vocal defending their patch!

Captured through the lens of Deidre Calldo Photography, this beautiful duo reminds me daily of the wonder right outside my window 🌿📷✨

📍 Lower Kruger National Park
🕛 Midday sightings are rare... but then came this guy.

🚶‍♂️💭 “The morning after the night before…”
Looking like he just ghosted the watering hole party, this Impala Ram gave us major post-party vibes. 🤯🍃
He crossed the road with a hangover swagger, ignored all brunch invitations, and disappeared into the bushes like a true bushveld mystery. 😅🌾

🦌 Impalas… More than just pretty horns:
• Only males grow those elegant, curved horns—used during the rutting season for epic head-to-head battles. (Think bushveld UFC, no gloves. 🥊🦌)
• Twists and scars on the horns? That’s from serious sparring. He’s not hungover—he’s a warrior. 💪
• They can leap over 10m in a single bound. (Even on a "rough" day.)
• Their stylish behinds? Built-in black markings that help the herd stay together in tall grass. Even their exits are iconic. 👑

Early morning magic in the wild.
The air was crisp, the sun just beginning to rise, and out of the shadows appeared this little bundle of curiosity.
A young hyena pup, wide-eyed and full of wonder, stepped into the golden light — and straight into our hearts.
Moments like these remind me why I fell in love with the bush.
