That long tail belongs to the male. During summer, the male long-tailed paradise whydahs develop their distinctive trailing feathers - a temporary signal used only for courtship.

Outside of breeding season, the display disappears. The bird returns to a quieter form, better suited to the months ahead.

In the bush, extravagance is seasonal and never without purpose.
