Jacaranda week. Pretoria and Joburg have gone lilac.

Here's the frame note we keep coming back to: your camera often sees jacarandas as blue. Not purple. Blue.

Shoot early, while the light is soft, so the petals don't wash out. Then in the grade, nudge the blue hue toward purple instead of just cranking saturation. And keep the fallen petals in the foreground. The carpet on the road tells the story as much as the canopy.

Grade it back to the street you actually stood in.

Storm light.

Highveld storm season is rolling in, and those late-afternoon skies give some of the best light of the year. Here's the grade rule we keep coming back to:

Protect the skin. Keep the sky heavy.

Expose for the face, then let the clouds stay dark. Lift the sky to match and the storm goes flat, and so does the story.

Left of the line: flat. Right of the line: graded.

The ocean story starts upstream.

It's National Marine Month (1 to 31 October). The pictures everyone shares are of the beach. The work often starts further inland: in the reeds, the stormwater drains and the rivers running through our neighbourhoods, with the people clearing them before most of us are up.

That's the frame we look for in purpose-led work. Conservation, social and donor stories that show the people doing it.

Campaign craft: the unscripted interview.

More South African brands are handing the mic to real people instead of a script. It looks easy on screen. It isn't easy to make.

Someone has to find the quiet room, place the light so the person forgets it's there, get the mic close without crowding them, and keep rolling after the "official" answer, because the good line usually comes after.

That's the craft we bring to brand stories: the shoot, the film, and the social content that follows.
