AMICHE n’est pas simplement un projet photographique pour moi, c’est un voyage émotionnel à travers le temps, un hommage aux femmes fortes et résilientes qui ont façonné nos communautés, en particulier celles issues de l’immigration italienne, depuis l’après-guerre jusqu’à nos jours.

En collaboration avec Ariane Tonon, nous avons voulu explorer ces histoires souvent méconnues, celles des femmes ouvrières celles qui ont travaillé dans les usines de Bienne. Dans chaque cliché d’Amiche, nous avons cherché à capturer l’essence même de Maria G., Maria O., Mirella et Muguette : leur force, leur détermination, mais aussi leur douceur et leur compassion. Nous avons voulu rendre hommage à leur héritage, à leur contribution souvent silencieuse mais essentielle à notre société et au développement économique de la Suisse industrielle de l’après-guerre.

THE FOREST NEXT DOOR

“When we moved from the center of the city to our neighborhood several years ago, I marveled at having a forest right next to my house. I knew it shyly. My daughters quickly became intimate with the forest, as they began to cross it daily on their way to school together with other girls and boys. In fact, it is the recommendation of the public education entities in Switzerland to send them alone to stimulate their independence and sense of orientation, not counting the intense social life that they are doing along the way. I remember my daughter Claudia’s enthusiasm when she commented on all the mushroom names that they had observed in situ with her science teacher, as well as knowing how to name each species of tree when we went on our family walks.”

It was a period of transformation for Kosovo being just after the war and during a time of economic recovery. We got to work alongside the Kosovars who had stayed. Slobodan Milošević was fighting with his army against several nations of Yugoslavia which was being dismantled, war after war. Slovenia separates without great tension. The Croats are fighting in a hard and bloody war with the Serbs, until their declaration of independence. Conflict is replicating in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a nation that is devastated. An armed militia, the UCK, rises in Kosovo, and the Albanian people of Kosovo, still a Serbian province, suffer economic isolation, political persecution and repression. I WORK WITH YOU

Last week I decided to build a photo series with some of the people I work or collaborate with, as a graphic designer, communication consultant, and artist-photographer....
I’ve sent an invitation to propose a photo shooting through a video-call meeting, asking them to pose for me, so I could make their portraits trough our computers, iPad, or mobile phone. They took me around their homes or working spaces, and I place them in different backgrounds. They posed and I did Shot screens from my computer. We had fun. We were all so immersed in this strange “coronatimes” state of incertitude, that a short and informal contact with people you work with, is also reinvigorating. Some are also close friends ...

CONFINED NEIGHBOURS

In this time of STAY AT HOME, I invited my neighbours, who are also friends, to pose for my camera from their homes.

Today, our neighbourhood relationship, which has always been active, is taking on greater proportions. Confined in our homes, and distant as we are from our families, our parents, grandparents, friends, work colleagues and classmates.

We strengthen our ties. We speak from our balconies or from our gardens, share ideas, tips, feelings, laughter, but also our concerns. And once a week, we have the pleasure of sharing an hour of relaxation, chats and music, each at home, while keeping our distance.

In this complicity, we become closer. Together, we do each other well. We don’t feel alone. We are all aware of this privilege. Thank you, my dear neighbours!
