Clyde and I were cruising along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico when we saw this amazing creation from a distance. When we finally got closer our only words were, “Now there is a REAL Bait Boat!”

We were visiting a small island in the Bahamas with not much to do but relax and stroll the beach. One afternoon we walked as far as the beach would take us and came upon this airplane.

When we returned from our walk, we asked the locals what had happened. They replied, “Oh, that was the last drug run those guys took.”

As the locals told it, the Coast Guard was chasing the airplane, and when the smugglers realized they couldn’t shake the Coast Guard, they landed by hitting the water and sliding up onto the beach.

The plane was full of drugs, so some of the guys on the island helped the men remove their product and then helped the drug runners escape from the island before the Coast Guard could get there.

Since no one came forward to claim their airplane, it has remained on the beach.

…and I asked him how it was that he ended up in the Florida Keys, he answered with this story: “I always felt out of place in the swamp and had heard that the Florida Keys tolerated uniqueness, so I headed south. Now I find myself very much at peace because I have a fun job of waving at tourists and I’m accepted as just another interesting species here in the Keys.”

The beauty and peace that I found at the Naples Botanical Garden were refreshing. The Asian Garden is where I found a sense of serenity and a favorite place for me, and it is where I took this image.

When I looked up the Lotus flower online, I was impressed with its symbolism: “The Lotus flower is regarded as a symbol of purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration, and rebirth. Its characteristics are a perfect analogy for the human condition: the Lotus produces the most beautiful flower even when its roots are in the dirtiest waters. No matter how impure its origins, the Lotus still manages to bloom brilliantly. As the Lotus emerges from the water, its petals open up. For this reason, these beautiful flowers are also symbols of having an open heart and receiving others with compassion. The flower shows us that allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and available to others – approaching them with empathy instead of judgment – benefits others and ourselves.”

As the soul grows and learns, “it unfolds itself, like a Lotus of countless petals.” Kahlil Gibran – The Prophet

Okay, it’s true…this is my dream. If I could create a perfect place to live that would satisfy my heart it would be on a beautiful island with palm trees, beach and turquoise water in my front yard. But my backyard would be a place like Big Cypress, filled with textures, creatures, swamps and an expanse of grasslands. Is there any place like that in the world?

While visiting Key West in 1998 we were fortunate to be in the right place when this great band came by playing music the of the Caribbean. It was such lively music and everyone was enjoying it so much I couldn’t resist taking a photo!

We rarely get as far away as the Dry Tortugas, but when we do, we always try to get over to Loggerhead Key. While on that island, we feel like we are at the edge of the earth and can look in any direction and see the horizon. It is truly peaceful.

The wood storks are back at our Clyde Butcher's Big Cypress Gallery!

Last year, wood storks began nesting for the first time in the cypress trees to the west of the Big Cypress Gallery’s parking lot. They are back again for the second year and have been busy bringing in material and building their nests. Come see these amazing birds. Bring your camera, but leave drones at home (they will disturb the birds, and are not permitted in the Big Cypress National Preserve).

The wood stork is North America’s only native stork. Adults stand about 3 feet tall with a wingspan of approximately 5 feet. It feeds by sweeping its open bill through water feeling for prey such as small fish and crustaceans.

The South Florida Wading Bird Report released in January 2025 notes that the wood stork is one of four indicator species of wading birds for Everglades health. “Nest success was poor both in 2022 and 2023 for all indicator species. Large-scale nest abandonments were evident in both years and were particularly severe for the federally listed Wood Stork, which fledged fewer than 20 birds over both years.

The relatively poor nesting during 2022 and 2023 highlights the critical role of hydrology and its effects on food availability and nesting responses.”

In spite of the continuing struggle of wood storks to have successful nesting outcomes, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the wood stork from the Endangered Species Act list effective March 12 2026.

I don’t think there is anything more calming than getting up before the world is awake and walking along the beach. On this morning the moon happened to be setting and just watching it slip beneath the horizon was so very peaceful.

Clyde and I were traveling across the desert of Southern California when we entered a small desert town. Clyde is very destination oriented, so when I saw this along side the road as we entered the town I asked him to stop and described to him why I wanted to stop, but he wasn’t fond of the idea.

It took a while, but he finally made a U-turn and drove back to the skeletons. Every time I look at the image it makes me smile. The person who put this strange group of musicians in front of their store went to a lot of work, but they sure had a very weird and fun sense of humor!
