Among Ignatovich’s most beloved works of art, this photograph is a timeless celebration of the joy and energy of youth. The artist positioned his subjects in a triangle composition that successfully corresponds to the rounded shape of the camera lens, and the interaction of light and shadow gives the photograph a warm vitality. He gave the image a warm vitality by masterfully balancing depth and tone, light and shadow — a technical control of light that he developed in the 1920s. Today marks the 120th anniversary of Boris Ignatovich (April 4, 1899 - April 4, 1976), a seminal figure of Russian Constructivism and a major artist of Russian avant-garde photography. Boris Ignatovich worked closely with Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, and El Lissitzky, all of whom become members of the distinguished October group, an avant-garde union of artists, architects, film directors, and photographers. In 1936, when asked who among contemporary photographers he most respected, Rodchenko responded, “Above all, Ignatovich. He has not only the keen eye of a reporter, but good taste. He's a gifted lad, a true artist.” Boris Ignatovich together with Alexander Rodchenko he led photo-section group October became an independent creative photographic association, which is known in the history of Soviet photography as a Group October
