Natural light food photography tip 👉🏼 when shooting next to a window with harsh sun coming through use a scrim to diffuse the light.

This helps give a perfect balance between shadows and highlights, whilst still providing directional light. As usual I shot with the light source 45 degrees to the rear of frame.

Next to my “Taste” Lightroom presets, a 5 in 1 reflector is probably the best food photography investment you’ll ever make.

Lighting Setup 👇🏼

For this image I used one off camera flash with a 120cm umbrella - no diffuser, no bounce.

As you can see from the shadow, the light was positioned just slightly back of 90 degrees to the right hand side of the dish.

This meant there was enough light to illuminate the stream of caramel, details of the apple pie and fingers holding the jug, while still providing enough shadow for a moody image.

Low ambient light helped provide that darkened background.
