Good morning from Odee and me! Well it’s been a long month with a setback and then the last two weeks I have been on an upswing. I have waited to be sure this was a trend and also a chance to get caught up on parts of my life I haven’t been able to do. My surgery was successful but two weeks after it I started having some weird symptoms that just really had me at a point of just being in bedrest unable to do much Then about two weeks ago they stopped. During this my autoimmune condition was improving, I’m beginning to think it was side effects from the infusions I got before my surgery. Now Odee and I are doing daily walks and getting ready to go on a low-key camping trip next week.

This particular health “adventure” began on June 4th, when I made a trip to the hospital and ended up spending my birthday in the hospital in critical care and discovered I had acquired an autoimmune condition. After a year of tired and failed treatments it looks like we are making progress. I won’t say I am in remission yet, but things are looking good!

I asked my hematologist if it was okay if I went camping and she told me to live my life but be careful, so we are heading out to Lava Lake next week!

Good afternoon from Odee and me! Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers! I am recuperating from surgery well, it’s a slow process but progressing well. I am cautiously optimistic this is going to get me back out hiking but it will take a while to return to my old level of activities. I’ll know more after this week’s doctor visit. I wish I could respond to all the comments on the last couple of posts but I want everyone to know I appreciate them.

**We have returned from “We will be back shortly…”**

Well, Odee said I can do some limited posting now. It’s been a week since my surgery and things are going well. Hopefully this will help put me into remission and get us back on the raod some this summer (maybe a little sooner.) I’ll be seeing my hematologist tomorrow and we can see if there is a difference yet. So my energy level is back to where I can begin some limited posting and do have some interesting things I have managed to do during recuperating. Thank all of you for all the prayers and well – wishes they are deeply appreciated!

“We will be back shortly”
We will be offline (I may lurk a little) for the next couple of days. I have surgery in the morning with an overnight stay, so we will check in here on a couple of days!

Good evening, it’s been another busy week and day with my medical team, but Odee and I are relaxing this evening. Here is a story to tide everyone over to our video tomorrow. I’m not sure if I will pre-record or do live. Right now I am leaning towards live. Here is a Random Thoughts Post from nine years ago on this date:

April 3, 2017 - Random Thoughts 4…
From Jackson’s and my five-month camping trip
Milepost: Grand Canyon

Get your campsite early; the late bird gets no campsite. I learned that last trip. (We booked another night here so we will be staying April 4th also.)

I 40 is a rough road, and I guess there are a bunch of easterners driving that road. They don’t understand: Keep right unless passing; like the other roads and Interstates out west.

If there is an Elk in your path, find another path.

I had intended for Photo Dog Jackson and myself to do part of the Bright Angel Trail today, but after consulting the forecast with our consulting ranger we decided to put it off tomorrow. Why did I consult with a ranger you may or may not have asked? Well just having a service dog on this trail is not simple. Rangers have to be notified and mule train drivers have to know, so the information has to be radioed in advance so everyone is informed there is a service dog is on the trail. We have to check in at the Backcountry Information Office first thing in the morning before beginning our hike. The ranger we spoke with said she will be looking out for us and will start the process when we meet in the morning. I am looking forward to hiking a little ways into the canyon; we won’t be going the whole length of the trail. In fact we have to present or plan in the proceedings tomorrow. I estimate we will hike about 1.5 miles in and then back out.

Last year we drove around because the park wasn’t as crowded and all roads were open for us to drive. This time we have parked the truck in the campsite and left it set us for camping. We are using the shuttle system, which is very nice and runs every 15 minutes. Jackson adapted to riding on a bus, his first experience, he settled down and looked curiously out the windows of the door wondering about the different perspective .

I have very little Internet signal so I have to go to the market to get Internet service here. So expect few posts and responses through the 4th; sorry about that, but it will give me more time to write 😉 .

Photo; On the trail the next trail after all the mule teams had been notified. The mule driver said, “Good boy!” when he passed us.

Good evening, Odee and I have had a busy day; but at the close of the evening we would like to share a sunset from one of our favorite areas up in the Cascades. A sunset over Elk Lake.

Memories from nine years ago:
A quote from the original post. This was on a five-month western trip with Jackson. We were at Canyon de Chelly National Monument in the Navajo Nation:
"Well, what a nice totally lazy day Photo Dog Jackson and I slept in, then we changed campsites (only two places away. We spent most of the day doing nothing. Then a two mile hike in the desert from the campground to the visitor center and back. After the hike we went to Winslow and had a nice meal and back to camp. Then back to lounging.
This was yesterday morning just before the rain rolled in at Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly National Monument."

Today is the date Jackson and I actually arrived from our 9,000 mile trip moving from North Carolina to Oregon. Yes I can make a trip a little longer that normal, something I am known for. I like to take the back road and old highways and take my time. Meeting people, relatives, and friends along the way. Getting to know the real people in our incredibly complex country and enjoying the beauty of our lands. This was actually our first night in Oregon at Harris Beach State Park out photographing the sunset that night. I am proud to call Oregon my home and it is so hard to believe eight years have passed!

Well, I fumbled through that one!
