Cool cloud cover -- 11:15pm one night in Sept....I went out for a check on the Northern Lights.....no lights were found that evening but the clouds sure were cool! I've checked the last couple of nights as well, my aurora app shows a potential but no luck. It was 10 below zero night before last and 5 below last night, I'll take the September temps for Northern Lights anytime over the current temps! I almost hope for not seeing the lights, cause if I do I'll really have to layer up and get the camera out. We get even colder this weekend, so I better stop complaining....

Good morning and welcome to 2025
We went most of the 2024 season without seeing Monarch butterflies, probably less than 10 all summer on our property. But come fall, we started finding several caterpillars, and started watching/tracking where they traveled. We watched 7 make their way to a good spots, form the chrysalis, and then watched as 3 of them emerged!! That was so cool to watch! This is one that had just emerged from its chrysalis above our front door of the house. Felt like I was back in grade school....except for the sore muscles and trouble getting off the ground after pictures.....

Our gauge shows -4 out there this morning, good time to sit by a fire and whittle a bit......or nap. Is it a nap when you've just had breakfast? hmmmm....

Mother Nature's light show!
This was from the Oct 10th light show, easily the best one I have ever watched! It started around 8pm and the show intensified off and on for hours....crazy how the colors would change and transition, sometimes fast and sometimes over several minutes. At the earliest after 8pm, it was still light from the evening sun but the purples began showing up at that point. The brilliant reds didn't happen until after 11. The thing missing in my pictures is the movement of the light....the entire sky danced for hours! I've tried video but I really need to work on those skills. At one point close to midnight, it was like the neighborhood was lit with street lights, and we are on a gravel road! October 2024 was the year for sitting in the driveway and watching the sky!

Greetings from the driveway!
This was a short-lived light show on Oct 7th, viewed from the comfort of a lawn chair in the driveway! October was a great month for northern lights viewing, we had 3 good shows and a couple of evenings with faint colors. This show on the 7th was only 2 hours long....it started just after 8pm with purple and green, then transitioned to red with green and white light beams. I've got no idea what the right terminology is for the colors and effects, but it is so cool and fascinating to watch! Luckily this one was early and no sleep was lost....

Under the big top

Welcome to a cold week folks, feels like winter is blowing in quickly! We had a banner year for mushrooms and fungi, it's wild how many different ones grow out there, and most of them pop up so fast! This giant one was on a decaying tree trunk, and it was big enough it caught my eye from inside the house. Only a handful of morels this year, and I'm too chicken to research and eat any of the "others"....that's what I call non-morels. I need to take a class with a true gatherer and learn the good from the bad.
