These three pieces (“one month after,” “three months after,” and “six months after” mixed media on canvas 24 x 36 inches) got accepted into a virtual gallery for “Unspoken: Survivors Stories V.” This art show aims to highlight Su***de Prevention Month. All of the pieces included in the show were created by artists whose lives have been impacted by su***de loss. I’ve shared these three pieces in honor of my late girlfriend, Kate. I spent my childhood comparing my artwork to the realistic pieces made by the professional artists in my family. I used art making as a therapeutic tool but struggled to create pieces that I was confident in. In college, I connected with the stability of geometric shapes and was able to embrace my identity as an abstract artist.

I have always had a deep connection to nature and an outlook that supports all of earth’s beauty. I wanted to incorporate nature’s organic elements into my abstract paintings but was uncertain how I would combine the two styles. Last spring, I decided to pick some flowers by my house and press them. I had an idea to use these dried flowers in my geometric paintings and fell in love with the result. This painting collection explores the harshness of geometric creations while softening hard lines with the gentleness of organic materials. I found a way to connect nature, the history of family artwork, and my own artist identity to create something that honors natural beauty but explores the chaos of geometric shapes and lines.
