'A Hall On The Welsh Marches'

Saturday August 29th 2015 saw Tyseley based GWR Hall Class No.4965 'Rood Ashton Hall' heading 'The Welsh Marches', which ran a circular route from Tyseley to Hereford and back, out via Gloucester and Chepstow, then returning via Shrewsbury and Wellington.

In this short video, I managed to capture the much missed Hall - whose boiler ticket expired in 2019 - speeding through Abergavenny, ready for the climb up Llanvihangel Bank, on the outward run, followed by the return run dashing through Craven Arms, including a rather dodgy live cut on the going away shot 😬

Another clip of 'No.9' from the archives. This time, we're up on the East Coast Main Line, catching 60009 passing Darlington Station, as it heads south with the Edinburgh to York section of the 'Great Britain VII', on the final day of the epic 9 day railtour.

A trip on the much missed summer series of "Cambrian" runs from Machynlleth to Porthmadog and, on select days, Pwllheli, with BR Standard Class 4MT No.76079 at the helm.

A couple of phone shots capture the "Pocket Rocket" at Machynlleth and, later, Pwllheli.

On Sunday 1st August 2021, LMS Jubilee No.45596 'Bahamas' became the first of its class to tackle the notorious South Devon Banks, in preservation, as it worked a 'Royal Duchy' between Taunton and Plymouth.

The first scene shows Bahamas running in drizzly conditions at Beambridge, passing under the A38 on the climb up to Whiteball Tunnel. The unique double chimney fitted Jubilee is later seen recovering lost speed on the lesser grades of Rattery Bank having just tackled the steepest section of the climb up to Tigley, made worse by a signal check further down the bank.

The return run from Plymouth is first caught slogging up the 1 in 42 gradient of Hemerdon Bank, with steam to spare, followed by a sunset dash past Pugham Farm, on the long eastbound run up to Whiteball Tunnel.

On a mizzly July day - a total contrast to today's weather! - we were treated to the sight and sound of Peppercorn A1 Pacific No.60163 'Tornado' at work over the South Devon Banks, heading a 'Royal Duchy' from Slough to Plymouth.

Having taken over from diesel power at Norton Fitzwarren - where a points failure had delayed the train by over 100 minutes - we see Tornado running up the lower slopes of Wellington Bank, passing Ash Bridge. A dash into Devon got us to Rattery Bank, just in time. Perched rather precariously alongside the busy A385, we catch Tornado making a fine sight up the 1 in 95 section of the climb from Totnes. The final shot captures the return working heading up the 1 in 42 gradient of Hemerdon Bank, with the A1 making it look easy on load 10.

Filmed Sunday 11th July 2021 on a Panasonic HC-X1500 with an Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone.
