Another phone photo from earlier this evening on the Thimphu - Paro highway. Tamcho Lhakhang, a temple of the great adept, engineer, physician, yogi, Thangthong Gyalpo (14th Century). I'm seeing the new lights on the temple for the first time. Photos from the DSLR will be a very late Latergram.

Autumn in Phobjikha Valley at Gella village. The sun feels good, the air is clean and Corona seems far away, but the valley doesn't have any of the international tourists of normal times. Hope things return to normal in 2021. Stay safe!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year as we all celebrate in different ways around the world at this time of the year when the days start to get longer again with the return of the sun.

In Western Bhutan (Paro and Haa), the new moon around the Winter Solstice marks the time when we all add/carry forward another year to our lives ("lo bak" = "Lomba"). People in Sikkim in India, neighbouring Haa in Bhutan also celebrate the same new year as Losoong.

Quick grabshot with the phone of the Memorial Chorten (stupa) in Thimphu during an evening bike ride today.

The Memorial Chorten was built in honour of the 3rd King of Bhutan, HM Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928-1974), who is fondly remembered as the father of modern Bhutan. He opened up Bhutan to the outside world and initiated "modern economic development" in response to changing world events, and made major political and social reforms in the country. He also steered Bhutan's membership to the United Nations at a time when neighbouring Buddhist countries were being annexed by their larger neighbours.
