Patience is everything when it comes to wildlife watching. Most days, the moments you witness are quiet, ordinary, and easy to overlook. But every once in awhile, if you stay long enough and watch closely, nature gives you something unforgettable.

Here, an eagle scavenges another animal’s catch… only to be dive bombed by a second eagle defending the prize. Alaska rarely stays peaceful for long.

As always, these moments were observed naturally and from a respectful distance.

They migrate vertically, not horizontally

Instead of long-distance travel, coastal mountain goats mostly move up and down the same mountain:

Summer → high alpine meadows
Winter → lower elevations, sometimes into forest edges

They stick to familiar terrain and rarely cross valleys.

Has Alaska captured your heart the way it has ours?

This reel brings together a few moments from life in Seward:

1. Salty Paws making her spring debut 🛥️
2. An Orca spy hopping—rising straight up out of the water to take a look around before slipping back beneath the surface
3: Chena & Sage, fully locked in, watching seabirds take flight
4: Steller sea lions hauled out on the rocks, likely thermoregulating; with pupping season approaching, a few may already be early arrivals
5. A Humpback whale lunge feeding 🐋
6. A pod of orcas traveling with purpose… destination unknown

After almost 2 years of waiting, we finally did it. We’ve got a slip!

This isn’t just a dock… it’s the start of everything we’ve been working toward. Salty Paws has a home. And we’re just getting started.

The key to happiness…

We did not approach these whales. They approached us on their own, which is allowed under federal law. We always maintain proper distances and operate responsibly to minimize disturbance.

The wild is waking up… and we’re ready for it.

Longer days, softer light, and the first hints of life returning to the wild. It’s that in-between season where winter hasn’t quite let go, but adventure is already calling.

Soon, the water will open, wildlife will stir, and the kind of moments we wait all year for will be back on the horizon!

Spring is starting to whisper across Alaska.
