Rakhan Pass — The Hidden Gateway Between Two Valleys
Khaltoro Valley (Haramosh) → Rakhan Pass → Gargo Meadows → Bagrot Valley — a spectacular mountain crossing that connects two remarkable valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan. 🏔️🥾❄️
Rakhan Pass (Rakhan Gali) is a spectacular high-altitude mountain pass in the Rakaposhi–Haramosh range of Gilgit-Baltistan, sitting at around 4,548 metres (14,918 ft).
What makes Rakhan Pass particularly special is its role as a natural connection between Bagrot Valley and Haramosh Valley. On the Haramosh side, the route passes through Khaltoro/Khaltaro Valley, while on the Bagrot side it opens toward the Gargo/Gargoh Meadows and the wider Bagrot Valley
The trek can therefore be seen as a journey from the green forests and pastures of Haramosh to the alpine landscapes of Bagrot. Khaltoro is a sub-valley of Haramosh, while Kutwal is another important sub-valley of the Haramosh region.
At the pass, trekkers encounter a dramatic landscape of glaciers, rocky ridges, alpine meadows and towering Karakoram peaks. The descent toward Bagrot reveals the expansive Gargo Meadows before the route continues down toward the villages of Bagrot.
Historically and locally, the pass has also served as a route between communities and grazing areas on both sides of the mountains. It remains a less-travelled and demanding trekking route, making it especially attractive for experienced trekkers looking for remote Himalayan-Karakoram wilderness.
