Sunrise - Torres del Paine National Park, Chili

My first morning in Torres del Paine started with a beautiful sunrise. It didn't last long but the pastel hues over the moutains, reflected in the lake below was a great way to start this part of the trip.

As many others have said, seeing a total eclipse really is an awesome sight. This was my first. One can easily imagine why long ago people thought the world was ending. Or, perhaps some God of choice was returning to cleanse the world. Nope, none of the above. Just an amazing coincidence that the Moon is 1/400th the diameter of the Sun and 400 times closer than the sun and they occasionally align. A coincidence not shared by any other planet-moon combination in our solar system.

This photo shows the peak eclipse which is the only time we can see the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona. If you look at around the 7:00 position you’ll see bright pink spots. These are gigantic loops of plasma that rise from the Sun’s surface, called prominences. The color is from the glowing hydrogen gas.

Was it worth the 13 hour drive home in traffic? Absolutely! Taken in Pittsburg, NH on April 8, 2024. Canon 5DSr camera with a Canon 600mm lens. F/4.0 @ 1/30s.

Another nice day for waves at Nubble Lighthouse. Lots of strong wind warnings from the drone but it handled 30 mph wind gusts easily. Hit 56 mph at full throttle with the wind at it’s back. Zoomin’!!

The regal Snowy Owl. They do a lot of just sitting around looking for their next meal. Since they are diurnal, you might find them sitting on a telephone pole, fence pole or a perch on the ground, patiently watching for prey. In addition to it's tremedous eyesight, they have great hearing, able to hear small rodents under the snow. Always a rare pleasure to see, they spend most of their time and mate in the arctic tundra.

Probably the cutest owl, this charming Northern Saw-Whet Owl is known for it's adorable facial expressions and big round eyes.

They weigh only about 3 ounces and are only about seven inches tall. They get their name from the sound they make which sounds like a saw being sharpened on a whetstone.

Mother Nature has been on a rage the last couple weekends along the coast. A lot of damage to beaches, buildings, roads, and the fishing industry.

This is Whaleback Lighthouse, taken from Fort Foster in Kittery, ME. It's truly hard to believe how many storms like this where these lighthouses have stood up strong and proud. Whaleback is now over 150 years old....just imagine the stories she could tell of Mother Nature trying to take her down.

A “brisk” morning at the Nubble Lighthouse today. Not a lot of sunrise color but I’ll share those later. So…I decided to launch the drone and head out to sea for an oceanside view. Imagine wrecking a ship 200 years ago on some ledge or rocks in the middle of the winter because there wasn’t a friendly red beacon to warn you. Chances of survival…not much.

Happy Thanksgiving from Nubble Lighthouse.

I love the versatility of a drone here, I can achieve very different perspectives than the limited ground locations. In this case, I was able to position that bright ball of fire (sun) in the lighthouse lantern. It's one of my favorite places to fly. Years ago I did some low-level (not this low),slow-flights here in my Cessna 172 while trying to also shoot out the window. It's so much easier...and much safer...with a drone.

Tropical Storm Lee did not disappoint with last night’s sunset. The colors were just amazing, starting with pinks and then transforming into these vivid oranges that we seldom see in New England.
