We came across this coyote in Yellowstone National Park this Spring looking for its next meal. A pronghorn seemed to be teasing it by being around but not getting too close. After a while the coyote lost interest in the pronghorn and started looking for a less ambitious meal. It was looking for a vole probably. It was very evident from its movement. Just when it set itself up for the famous leap in the air to get to the vole, I started shooting in burst mode and got lucky to be able to capture the entire sequence. Unfortunately for the coyote it was not able to get its meal but it did make my money worth.

Flying lights

While planning our trip to Barrow, AK we factored in the chance of seeing northern lights. We booked dates such that there was a 6KP level northern lights prediction. When we boarded the flight towards Fairbanks we were all excited looking out of the window in anticipation of seeing them. But in the first hour we did not see anything and went off to sleep. Soon Saurabh Shankar woke me up that there was some cloud like formation in the sky which he suspected to be the lights. But then it was not very active. We did not see the famous dance moves. We continued to look out of the window and pointed our cameras in the direction of the "clouds" to try and see if we could get anything. It turned out what we were looking at were northern lights. We got all excited and tried to look for empty window seats. The Alaska Airlines crew were super co-operative. They turned down the cabin lights so that we could get better pictures. During all this, the entire sky had turned green and also lit up the clouds below. Also the lights started performing their famous "dance". It was a mind blowing experience. Just amazed at the beauty of this spectacle.

Snowy Owl, Barrow, Alaska

Spotting arctic wildlife was our main goal of visiting Barrow. Of course polar bears were on the top of the list but we did not get to see any. But the snowy owl made sure we did not go back home without any arctic wildlife sightings. We drove around many lakes around Barrow for few hours without spotting anything. We had almost given up hope when Saurabh Shankar spotted a white bird land on the rooftop of a house near Nunavak Bay. As we drove closer it was clear we had finally spotted a snowy owl. We quickly got off the car and walked into the tundra to get few close up shots. The owl entertained us for about an hour. Flying to and from the house giving us plenty of opportunity to capture it in flight.
What made it even more memorable for Saurabh and Akshay was that this was their first ever owl sighting. What a start!

Arctic Sunset

Barrow, Alaska is the northernmost inhabited point of North America. We visited the place in hope of seeing the polar bears. Unfortunately 3 days was not sufficient to spot them. But we were blessed with the famous arctic sunset. Blue hours last for almost an hour allowing us enough time to play around with the best composition. This semi frozen lake with broken ice pieces was creating an intriguing landscape.

Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy

Vernazza is one of the 5 beautiful coastal towns of Cinque Terre in Italy. The colorful houses with the sea in the background make for a beautiful sight. I visited the town in October 2016. This turned out to be the best time to visit this place. There were hardly any tourists and October is famous for storms in this region, making it really beautiful to shoot. This picture was taken early in the morning just before the storm hit us.

Venice from Rialto bridge

I had visited Venice as a kid but did not have any memory of the place so was really looking forward to my trip there last October. But unfortunately its beauty has lead to its own doom. It is filled with tourists all through the year, causing lots of issues like uncleanliness, inflated prices and rude locals. All the while I was there, I only wished the government puts in place an annual visitor limit on this beautiful city.

Val Gardena, Dolomites, Italian Alps

We came across this stunning landscape on our early morning drive through Val Gardena last October. I could only envy the people living in the houses below blessed with such an amazing scenery right outside their window.

Sunrises at Dead Horse Point State Park are mesmerizing. To witness the sunlight glow up the vast valley slowly is a sight not worth missing.

Focus of the fox

Red fox are my favorite wild animals to photograph. They are super cute and very co-operative. I came across this one in the Yellowstone National Park picnic area. It was known to hang out in the area, sometimes stealing food from the people.
On this occasion it was hiding in the sagebrush from the crowd that had gathered to see it.

Barn Swallow @ Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge

I came across this barn swallow full of character at the Ravenswood ponds, part of the Don Edwards NWR. I noticed it sitting on a concrete slab above the pond and started taking its pictures. While doing so I slowly moved towards it. It did not move until I was just a couple of meters away from it. I almost sensed some sort of bond with it. Generally swallows are sensitive to human presence that they are very difficult to photograph. But not this one. Every few minutes it would fly away and then came back and sat on the same slab giving me the opportunity to snap its landing.

Black mama bear, Banff National Park, Canada

We were very lucky in sighting black bears throughout our week long trip in the Canadian Rockies this July. We saw at least 1 per day. We spotted this particular mother twice in the same area once in the morning with her cubs and later in the evening grazing alone. She had a very expressive face at times enjoying what she was eating, during others annoyed by the number of insects trying to eat her.

Grizzly #126

Banff National Park in Canada is known for its grizzly population. Apart from the beautiful landscapes, my goal was to photograph these amazing animals. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to spot wildlife and so we got up at sunrise to drive around one of the highways known to have grizzly sightings. We drove around for over an hour without any luck and were on our way back to the campsite when I spotted this huge male grizzly #126 foraging near the road.
This is the best sighting I have ever had. For nearly half an hour we had him almost to ourselves. These pictures are taken from the car when he passed by us while we were waiting at a pullout. While I love Yellowstone National Park, the only negative about it is the size of the crowd. What made this experience all the more surreal was we had him to ourselves for the longest time.
