I love photographing old churches, especially in the early morning light before anyone else is stirring. Such was the case when I captured this image in Iceland around 2am last summer. Ancient paving stones often mark the pathways to churches where generations have walked to baptize their infants, marry their sweetheart or burry their loved ones. The faithful may have trod these same steps for a millennia with dedication, often bringing their sorrow and grief to find consolation in prayer.
I often wonder, if these paths could speak what stories might they tell? My own path to faith has been a fractured one, however I still find inspiration when standing before scenes like this. "Though a church of mortals may break my heart, yet will I still believe in God."
