Day 17: Didn't expect to see the baby cardinal so close to me this evening! I was walking on the deck around 7:30pm, the sun was setting and suddenly there was a rustling sound from a bush next to the deck and heard something land behind me on top of the rail. I turned around. At first, I didn't recognize what it was. It was about half the size of the adult cardinals but the color is brownish. However, it had a little perky feather on its small head. We stared at each other for a few seconds and it seemed to recognize me. I took pictures when it was still in the nest. We had a brief moment of bonding and it flew to its dad, and then the mom joined them together before getting behind the tall trees. I didn't bring my camera with me but I will treasure the moment when it looked at me from just 2 feet away. I still have only seen one baby cardinal with its parents. Where is the other baby? A gloomy feeling is starting to overtake the joy of seeing the happy family of three.

Backyard cardinal babies - 9 days old! One baby has grown into a toddler. However, the other was missing! In the video, you can see the mom adjusted the position of the green caterpillar sereval times inside its mouth! Very caring. (2021-05-18)
