Your photos aren’t just at risk from floods and fires. The danger could be where they live.

Those old “magnetic” photo albums may have seemed like a safe and convenient choice, but over time, the paper, adhesive, and plastic covering can damage the photographs inside. Photos may develop an orange or yellow cast, fade, become stained, or stick firmly to the pages.

The photographs shown here are a real example of magnetic album damage and a reminder that the album you thought was protecting your memories today may be harming them tomorrow.

If you have one of these albums, don’t force the photos off the pages. They can tear, curl, or separate. Instead, consider scanning them in place or us about safe removal options. The good news is we can do it for you, and we can color correct those orange photos!

Whether you preserve them yourself, ask for guidance, or hand the project to us, the important thing is to begin. One album and one photo at a time.

During Save Your Photos Month: what would you grab first in an emergency? Protecting family photos and videos before a flood, fire, hurricane, or burst pipe preserves memories insurance can’t replace. Read tips to prepare your emergency grab-and-go and keep what matters safe. https://wix.to/Bf4T3OW

These photographs were damaged by a burst pipe. The photos were in a plastic bin, but unfortunately, there was a crack at the bottom of the bin, and when the pipe burst and flooded their basement, water seeped up through into the bin.

The family never expected water to reach their memories, but that is the problem with disasters: they rarely give us time to prepare.

When photographs become wet, the image layer can soften, colors may bleed, pictures can stick together, and mold can begin growing surprisingly quickly.

If your photos ever get wet:

• Do not pull apart photographs that are stuck together.
• Handle them carefully by the edges.
• Air-dry them individually, image-side up, if possible.
• Get professional guidance quickly for irreplaceable or badly damaged photographs.

Today’s simple challenge: Look at where your photos, albums, negatives, and home movies are stored. Are they near plumbing, on a basement floor, under a bathroom, or somewhere vulnerable to leaks?

You can move them to a safer location, digitize them yourself, ask for guidance, or have a professional preserve them. The important thing is protecting them before the unexpected happens.

Insurance may replace your belongings. It cannot replace your family’s history.

September 1 marks the beginning of Save Your Photos Month, a time to focus on protecting what insurance can’t replace: our memories and our family’s history.

The photos in this post show my grandmother throughout her life: as a little girl with my great-grandparents and her brother in Ireland, as a 19-year-old bride marrying my grandfather while he served in the Navy, and later with Patricia and James, the two youngest of her five children in Scotland.

My grandmother had an enormous impact on my life. I can’t imagine what it would feel like if these photographs disappeared and these moments existed only as memories in my head.

Throughout September, Preserving Memories will be sharing practical tips and simple ways to protect your photographs, home movies, and family history—for you and for the generations who come after you.

What photographs do you cherish most and know should be protected before it’s too late?

Sometimes, among the thousands of photos we collect, there is one that means everything.

A client recently shared these kind words after we restored a photograph found shortly after his father-in-law passed away. It shows him as a young man, just beginning his career in the mining industry—a priceless piece of his story and a meaningful keepsake for the entire family.

We’re honored to help preserve memories that matter this much.

✨ Photoshop Friday ✨

This was the only copy my client had of this photo in a frame.

Somehow, over the years it faded badly and developed streaks even though it had never been removed from its frame. They thought it was ruined.

After a little Photoshop magic 🪄 and a lot of attention to detail, we were able to bring it back to life. ❤️

Do you have that one special photo you’ve always wished looked better? Don’t assume it’s beyond saving. I’d be happy to take a look and let you know what’s possible.
You can even text a picture of it to us for a free estimate!
