Granville Carroll Photo Artist and Educator Granville Carroll is a visual artist and educator currently based in Rochester, NY. Who are we at our core?

He works with photography and digital compositing/photo-manipulation. Carroll received a AA from Mesa Community College, a BFA in Photography from Arizona State University and a MFA in Photography and Related Media from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Carroll was awarded a MFA scholarship for Photolucida’s Critical Mass 2020, placing him amongst the top 200 finalists. Carroll’s work has bee

n exhibited nationally and has recently been featured on Lenscratch, Photo-Emphasis, Humble Arts Foundation, and In the In-Between. Carroll’s work is influenced by Afrofuturism and spirituality. Carroll uses the indexical nature of photography to bend the world and create new and imaginative landscapes and self-portraits. His work addresses issues of representation and identity construction. He questions who we are beyond the constructs of society and labels we define ourselves with. When stripped of our physical manifestation what lies beneath it all? Carroll activates this space of questioning through the imaginary landscapes and portraits he constructs.

Exciting things are on the horizon! Here’s a sneak peak into my new book project, Dark Matter. It’s been a long time in the making but the book is almost ready for the world to experience! This is just the first proof and some edits will take place. All in all it’s coming together beautifully and I couldn’t be happier with the results so far. This book will be printed with all black pages with a combination of silver and all black imagery. It will also contain original poems/writings about life, death, blackness, and the meaning of existence. I can’t wait to share this project in its totality. More details to come!

Last week I had the most wonderful time visiting Boston and the to speak with students from Burlington and Wi******er High school about their work and exhibition for Photosynthesis. Earlier in the year I met with them via Zoom to share my practice and artwork and concepts to help them realize their own visions. This group of students is so talented and I hope to see them all flourish into thoughtful image makers. I am so thankful to and the for their wonderful hospitality and for trusting me to inspire the youth!

Head over to to view two of my images I donated along with many other talented and thoughtful artists in support of the Buffalo community dealing with the aftermath of yet another tragic shooting. Please bid to win my artwork or any of the beautiful pieces and allow CEPA to continue providing wonderful art education and self-advocacy programs to the community. This year, they have pledged $8000 of the proceeds to be used on providing services to the East Side Community with their Field Darkroom through the Buffalo Public School system Arts & Healing efforts.

Photography has a wonderful ability to showcase stories and narratives that transcend the linear construct of time. The malleability of the medium helps us to visually construct our personal and collective origin stories. It can shift the ways we view the world and our place within it. I often ask myself who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going? These self-reflective questions can reveal how personal and collective histories impact our creative vision to represent the world through photography. To understand the ”why” regarding our use of photography, it is important to go back to the source, to where identity began to be shaped. Peering into the past allows us to confront the many ways we have constructed our identities and how our identities have been constructed for us through social values, family legacy, and cultural traditions. Reflecting on the past allows us to understand where we are currently and the possibilities for where we will go next.

I am interested in seeing images that reflect these ideas, that show us how you examine your origins of being and its manifestation in your art practice. How does your upbringing, ideologies, belief systems, and traditions influence your representations through photography? Share with us how you explore your origin stories, whether it is based in history and fact or based in fiction and the imagination. Some origins have been lost, some transformed, and some have maintained their essence throughout time. Submit images that showcase how you meditate on the origins of your life and how it has shaped your identity. All conceptual approaches are welcome. All photographic processes, from analog to digital, are welcome."

More creations from the BTS shoot for film adaptation of Sultana’s Dream.

This is the moment before Sultana leaves Sara and the garden to enter cosmic space. My creative interpretation shows Sultana standing at the entrance to a portal. Right before she steps in she looks back at Sara and the garden taking in all that she’s learned from this magical experience, readying herself to explore the world without boundaries.

Sultana’s Dream originally written by Begum Rokeya, also known as Rokeya Sahkawat Hossain. ________________________________

First Man, 2022
Newest addition to my project In the Finite, Infinitely.

Inspired by both the West African Yoruba creation story and the creation story told in the Christian faith. This image symbolizes the coming together of physical and cosmic matter. It is a synthesis of my religious upbringing and examination of a potential origin in West Africa.

The Weaver, 2022

One of the newest additions to my project In the Finite, Infinitely. This piece has recently been featured for Celestials Bodies Between Heaven and Earth, for Issue 155, and for their Instagram takeover.

This was the first image I made after hearing of my friend passing away. It took me a while to get into the groove again. Grief definitely takes a hold of you in unexpected ways. I was listening to song The Weaver and was inspired by the lyrics

“Turn your gaze within
And start knocking on the door
Weave your actions well
Into the fabric of your soul
If you wander now
You'll never find your way back home”

This song spoke to me and reminded me of how we are the sum of all our experiences. I was reminded of how light and darkness births form and that it is the culmination of experiences that we weave together to form our identity. This is just another step in the evolution of the self and collective conscious of being.

Super excited to have the chance to share my work in this show and to help and curate this wonderful exhibition.

This exhibition opens tomorrow at and shows some amazing work by some awesome artists who work in a variety of media but share a common bond and discussion of our place in the cosmos. Check out more details below!! If you’re in the Southwest be sure to head over to Las Cruces and see the exhibition in person!

Celestial Bodies: Between Heaven and Earth, a multimedia group exhibition is a response to the modern billionaire Space Race, which is primarily taking place in what is currently the “American Southwest”. The exhibition centers different historic and cultural connections to the cosmos, while drawing essential parallels between the space race and the effects of conquest and colonialism.

The work in the show underscores cultural connections to outer space while expanding ideas around our physical forms as celestial bodies. The exhibition investigates the concept of “the body” on four scales: the singular body, a communal body, bodies of land, and the cosmic body.

Celestial Bodies: Between Heaven and Earth will open March 4 at the CAV Gallery in Las Cruces, New Mexico and show for a month, closing April 1.

As the year winds down I find myself in a state of deep reflection. Recent events in my life have caused me to slow down and reevaluate my values and connections. I want to share a spread from my new book project Dark Matter that depicts my journey with death and the afterlife, amongst other ideas and themes.

In September of this year I began a residency at VSW where I started making progress on my book. Prior to the residency I started to conceptualize death and what it means to me and how it manifests in my work. My sister sent me a song that she didn’t realize was about death. In this song they chanted this phrase, Akal. I had never heard of this phrase so I looked it up and was surprised by its meaning. When one passes away this word is chanted to give passage to the departed. The loose translation of the word is the act of undying or to speak to the infinite soul. At this point I began to really conceptualize death in the form of abstraction, blackness, imagery, and words. It became a backdrop to the project as I investigated my understanding of Blackness and existence.

Little did I know I would be confronted with death just a few months later. To conceptualize it is one thing, but to experience it is another. As I embark on my path of healing from losing a loved one to Covid, I continue to reflect on what it means to be infinite and timeless and how art can be a point of healing.

This poem (slide 2) which I wrote back in September has a whole new meaning and I have a whole new understanding on death and the process of grieving those we lose. I’m moving forward into the new year with a fresh perspective on life and strengthening my mind to be grateful for the present moment. This book project continues to evolve in unexpected ways which is exciting and scary all at the same time. As always, I’m here to embrace the unknown and move through the darkness with grace.

EXCITING NEWS!!! Later this month I will be giving an artist talk ! I am beyond thrilled to be able to share my work and practice. For those who will be in or around Rochester in October I hope to see you there! I will be sharing a range of photographic projects to examine what the veil means, how I use Afrofuturism to peer beyond it, and what we can all do to push against the many limitations of social labels and expectations. Beyond the Veil will take you through my imaginative journey to understand humanity beyond the context of social constructs and into otherworldly and newly crafted universes! I will also be sharing a new project I am currently working on called Dark Matter. More details via the link in my bio.

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of shooting some behind the scenes images for film Sultana’s Dream. Using some of the images, I envisioned the story unfolding through afrofuturism and the creation of a utopian society which are concepts found within the story itself. This image shows Sara (played by ), one of the main characters who guides Sultana through her journey of self discovery and the dreamscape.
