Alright, so in about a year my family and I will be moving to Newport News and my goal is to start covering Newport News and Hampton Fire in addition to my little bit of coverage. My biggest concern or challenge is learning the districts and their First Due areas. I can’t find a map that shows stations with districts; if there’s anyone out there that has a coverage map of Newport News Fire and Hampton Fire and willing to share it, I would greatly appreciate it so I can learn more.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke emanating from the building and initiated an aggressive interior attack utilizing multiple handlines. Vertical ventilation operations were conducted to control fire spread and enhance interior conditions. As fire conditions intensified and the fire became well advanced, crews were withdrawn from the structure and operations transitioned to a defensive attack. Following the knockdown of the bulk of the fire, firefighters re-entered the building to extinguish remaining hotspots and commence overhaul operations. Firefighters conducted searches for two pets believed to be inside the structure, unfortunately, one pet succumbed to the fire.

On Saturday morning at approximately 7:47am, James city crews responded to a reported structure fire in the FirstDue area of Station 3. The caller indicated that a shed located at the rear of a residential property was ablaze and that the fire was spreading to the adjacent wooded area. Upon arrival, EMS 1 arrived to observed a fully involved shed with a significant exposure risk to the nearby home. Stopped by Smithfield Vol. Fire Department to see how the crews were doing yesterday. While walking around, I was inspired by the many unique helmet shields that have played a crucial role in countless heroic moments and rigorous training exercises. If these shields could share their stories, I’m sure we’d be amazed by their bravery and resilience.

At approximately 5:48 pm, the Williamsburg Fire Department received notification of a residential structure fire within their primary response area. En route, additional callers reported visible heavy gray smoke emanating from the garage area accompanied by loud cracking sounds. Upon arrival, Battalion 10 observed smoke extruding from the garage, prompting Engine 10, the first-in engine, to deploy two handheld hoses to the garage door. Engine 31 from James City established a water supply connection and assisted Engine 10. Fire crews conducted two thorough searches, both yielding negative results for occupants.

At approximately 6:40pm, York Station 3 crews received an alert for a structure fire within their FirstDue area. Upon further investigation, it was determined that a gazebo, rather than a residential building, was involved. Squad 3 arrived on the scene to find a fully engulfed gazebo with brush involved. Due to spatial constraints, crews employed a leader line (3-inch hose with a gated Y) to apply water to the fire, utilizing a hose bundle for fire attack. James City provided additional support with water supply on scene for Squad 3. Following successful extinguishment, crews transferred the scene to fire prevention and returned to service, Strong work by all involved.
