It’s been years since I picked up a camera for enjoyment rather than work. To document my life, my family, the fun and joy, it used to be second nature. But for the last several years I’ve been mostly overwhelmed with growing businesses, growing my family, and the health issues that have come with all of that. I’m hopefully slowly reemerging into myself and the things that a once loved. Here’s a recent trip to Northern California with some great family.

I did a lot more snowshoeing than snowboarding this winter, which is highly unusual for me. I have to say, although I know it will be different, I’m very much looking forward to using my body to do the things that I love again like surfing, climbing, mountain biking and snowboarding. It’s been one of the hardest parts about being pregnant for me. As someone whose hobbies all include moving their body in various ways, it’s really hard when most of that is taken away. Mom’s who have been though this, give me some hope for future adventures in the comments! Again, big thanks to for keeping me outfitted and comfortable this winter!

I was 6.5 months pregnant on my last winter adventure of the season. I was able to shoot a winter hiking/ski elopement (though my doc said no skiing so I hired an awesome Photog for that portion). But I was super thankful that I was still able to move comfortably on frozen ground, with micro spikes on, this far along. Now I’m 8 months pregnant and I’m a little more uncomfortable, but still hiking. I did 3 miles yesterday and that seems to be my happy spot right now. Big thanks to for providing outdoor gear that fit over my bump and provided warmth and comfort for my winter shoots this season!

Yesterday we explored the Matanuska Glacier with . I loved having a guide take us to places I’d never consider going on my own just because their knowledge of the glacier is so much more extensive than my own. We explored an ice slot canyon and we’re able to see the ice fall up close. Big thanks to for being awesome and leading the way!

Flying in between the most intense and amazing mountains I’ve ever seen with yesterday was one of the most unreal experiences. 10/10 would recommend seeing Alaska from the air.

We were extremely lucky and not only did we get to see all the peaks, but we were able to land on the glacier with no one else around.

I am excited to announce that I am partnering with Get In The Wild Adventures to bring you a Canyon Photography Workshop. Photograph and explore the Dirty Devil/Robber's Roost Wilderness, some of the most beautiful and awe inspiring landscapes of Southern Utah from May 14-17. We'll spend three days shooting and exploring seldom seen slot canyons, hidden arches and stunning vistas. I will teach my creative process for shooting, exploring and editing images. This is a great opportunity to take your photos to the next level and explore a wilderness that most people have never heard of, let alone ever visited. Experience a true Utah wilderness adventure! https://getinthewild.com/adventure/canyon-photography-workshop/

Most people know Utah is my happy place, a place where you can descend canyons with a paddle and exit to find a double rainbow waiting for you at the end of a long, wildly beautiful day. As much as I can’t wait to get back there to explore old favorites and new vistas, I’m diving into my photo archives to find those beautiful desert views and exploring close to home adventures right now.

I was talking with a friend the other day about the killing of Amaud Abery and she said, “silence is violence.” And I nodded in agreement. Because I do agree, but I’m guilty of that silence because I have the privilege of being mostly unaffected by the violence.

Yesterday, I woke up and found out was killed by a police officer standing on his neck after he was already cuffed on the ground, and a white woman called the cops on a black man who was birding in Central Park because he wanted her to leash her dog, which is required in the area they were in.

It’s easy to hear about these stories and think that it’s awful, but then move on. But the people living this reality can’t move on. I need to hold myself more accountable, and we need to be more accountable collectively. The needle will only move when enough of us who are unaffected are as angry as those affected every day.

My friend wrote a post that included the words of .cargle // she shared a resource list & these words: “I implore you to remember — the point of AntiRacism work isn’t to make white people feel they are “doing better” in their positions of privilege and power within this immoral system— it is for them to hold themselves and their white community accountable for addressing and attacking the very system that needs to be destroyed in order for black people to stay alive and to be well.”

Let’s support those doing the hard work and help to upend a system that was designed for some to flourish while others are being held down with knees on the back of their necks- both literally and figuratively. Also, please drop other resources in the comments. We need to rally in support of the amazing women and men at the forefront of this fight.
