Does your to-do list feel like a monster that just keeps growing no matter how much you cross off?

Analysis paralysis. Too many shiny objects. Never enough hours. I see this all the time — especially with clients trying to map out their branding sessions. So many ideas, so many choices... and then the brain just shuts down.

Here's the thing: everything is filterable.

Instead of drowning in the details, zoom out to the big picture. Still feels like too much? Channel your inner Rory Gilmore and make a pro/con list.

When you're planning your brand (and especially your branding session), run every idea through this quick gut-check:

👉 Does it achieve a goal?
👉 Does it fit my brand?
👉 Is it actually doable — time, money, logistics?

If you need to narrow even further, start collecting. I'm constantly snapping photos of wall art, interesting patterns, a cool corner of a coffee shop. Sometimes it becomes a session concept. Sometimes it's just inspiration living in my camera roll. Either way, it keeps my brain moving without forcing a decision.

Linear planning is a myth. We all know this. But organizing your thoughts differently? That's where the magic happens.

What's your go-to trick for getting out of your own head? Drop it below. 👇

Ok sure, but — is that you? (I fear I might hit a nerve but it has to be asked.)

Picture this: we're sitting at a coffee shop, chatting about what you want out of your business. The topic of your brand comes up.

You've got some big visual changes that you want to implement. Something that will finally make you stand out from your competitors.

You start describing it — where you think you want to take it. But the whole time, you're verbally gritting your teeth. You are literally wincing in the most slightest way but it is still noticeable if you are paying attention.

When the idea of dancing on TikTok actually leaves your mouth ... I start holding my breath.

The strategy you're pitching is heavily inspired by your most successful competitor. You're trying to convince both of us it's right.

You shift nervously in your seat.

I sit quietly, choosing my words carefully, because the Check Engine light in my head is blinking loud and clear.

You finally look up at me. I set my pen down.

And I ask, quietly: "Can I ask you a question?"

Stay tuned for Part 2 — I'll share what I asked, and why it changed everything.

Knocks for the other side of the glass ...You in there? Yeah I'm talking to you.
How's it going?

We all thought 2020 was rough, but let’s be honest—the years since haven’t exactly been a walk in the park.

Are you throwing everything at the wall, hoping it will stick but nothing does?

You post.
You network.
You rinse, wash and repeat.

You start following people promising that they have the solution, comment 'YES' and they will send you their EASY button solution.

You try it and it doesn't work. Your shoulders tense up and you aren't sure where to go next.

I know that feeling.

That’s why I stepped back from social media and marketing for a while. It all started feeling a little sad.

I got tired of posting pretty pictures and trying to convince people to hire me.
So why should they hire me?

That question haunted me for years. Then I realized the answer had been sitting right in front of me the whole time.

People don’t hire me because I own a camera.

They hire me because of how I see.
Because of how I listen.
Because of how I tell stories.
Because I’m me.

The people who hire me aren't looking for another photographer.

They're looking for someone they trust.

They're looking for someone they trust.

Yes, I still need to market my business.

But I don’t need to dance for an algorithm. I just need to be authentically me.

I don’t need to become someone else to be worthy of attention. I just need to be who I am.

And maybe you do too.

I'm not here to prove myself to anyone but me. Maybe that's the lesson I've been chasing all along.

Story time. I recently took a relative shopping for capris.

I already know what you're thinking — Karra, what does pants shopping have to do with photography? Bear with me.

By the time I asked a few actual questions, I learned the requirements: no longer than the knee, ideally waterproof, lightweight enough for 85-degree humidity, and must have belt loops. Oh, and not white. Not cream. Definitely not taupe.

We hit five stores. Drove 20 miles round trip. And if we'd had that conversation before we left the driveway? We probably could've found the mythical unicorn pants in one stop.

Here's the thing: when we don't have enough detail about someone else's problem, we fill in the blanks with our own assumptions. Our own filters. And then we're both wandering around a department store in the wrong section.

This happens all the time with photography inquiries. Someone reaches out and says "I need pictures." And of course their first question is how much — totally fair. But the real work is figuring out who, what, when, where, why, and how. Because all of those things shape the answer.

That's why working with someone who knows the right questions to ask makes all the difference. Not to interrogate you — but to actually get you what you need.

Wanna skip the 5-store tour? Send me a DM and let's figure it out. 👇

While branding and corporate photography has been my focus for quite some time now, I used to be a pet photographer and an active KHS volunteer. People would of course ask me, are you a cat or a dog person?

So why is it important to pay attention to what you wear to your headshot location and what you wear? Non verbal cues are important. Whether you realize it or not, what you wear and where you are for your headshot matters. Why? Because people make subtle judgments about you without often realizing they are making those judgments. Yes people are that fickle. The whole ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ is a thing.

Your location and your outfit need to represent your brand and the overall vibe of you and your business. Nicole (the headshot above) is a counselor. She had recently redecorated her office in a Hygge decor aesthetic so her counseling client would feel comfortable. Nicole wanted to put forth a professional but approachable style. We photographed Nicole in her office where she will meet and work with her clients. Her clients get to see where she works and will connect with her. By photographing her headshot in a space that her clients will recognize, they will comfortable because they will have already seen her in her space. Having clients who are seeking help feel comfortable builds rapport long before their first session with Nicole.

So when you are planning a headshot or even your next branding session - Think about what you look good in color wise, what fits your brand and how you want to tie your company’s focus is - would a headshot shot be better a traditional studio, an on location in your space with your equipment or maybe an outdoor location like a sunflower field!
