Parents tell me all the time that their senior won't last three hours. And you know what? They're usually right. That's actually the point.

Three hours isn't there to fill a calendar. It's the most we'll ever go, so I never have to rush your senior, and rushing is the fastest way to end up with stiff, uncomfortable photos. I'd never put your kid through that. This time exists so you and your senior never have to watch the clock, and never have to wonder if you're getting your money's worth.

Here's how it really goes. The first twenty minutes, most seniors are a little nervous, which is completely normal. Those first minutes aren't wasted. They're when your senior gets to loosen up and find their footing. By about the hour mark, they forget the camera is even there. That's when the photos worth printing start happening.

All that time is what makes room for three to five outfits, a few of my favorite local spots, professional hair and makeup, and posing I guide the whole way through. Your senior just gets to relax and be themselves.

And at the end, they don't just walk away with a gallery. They walk away having had a genuinely good day, and you get the kind of portraits you'll keep out for years, the ones that make you stop and think "that's my kid."

You’ve seen a senior’s gallery that missed the mark. She showed up excited, and the photos just did not look like her. Nine times out of ten, the outfit is why.

Two of the mistakes I see most:

Too short. Shorts and skirts that ride up limit how I can pose you. Longer, flowy pieces give you room to move and a lot more variety.

Hidden colors. Bright or patterned undergarments show right through light fabrics. N**e tones that match your skin keep the focus on your face.

Small fixes, but they are the difference between a gallery you love and one that feels off.

That is two of the five. The other three surprise people the most.

Maybe you are worried you are not photogenic, or that your photos will not measure up to the other seniors you see. That is not about luck, and it is not about being a model. It is about prep. That is exactly why every senior I work with plans a three-look wardrobe with me first and gets coached through every pose. Almost every mom tells me the same thing before her daughter's session. "She's a little shy, she might be nervous."

I get it, and I promise it's handled. Your daughter starts with hair and makeup, so that she has time to settle in and feel like her most confident self before the camera ever comes out. Senior Sunday is here. 🤍 Meet Ben.

Ben attends Freestate, sings in Chamber Choir, and is on his way to college with medical school as the goal. His friends describe him as a big goofy guy, and one session with him tells you exactly why that is the highest compliment.

I photographed him across three Lawrence spots close to my heart. KU Campus, Downtown, and the Arboretum. He brought three looks that were completely him, and every outfit felt natural and easy. My favorite moment came when I had him throw leaves in the air. He said it was the best part of the whole session, and that kind of moment only happens once your senior forgets the camera is even there.

Worried you'll invest in senior photos and get back a son who looks stiff and checked out, nothing like the kid you actually know?

Most guys freeze because they have no idea what to do with themselves in front of a camera, and they're sure they'll look dumb trying. That's my job, not his. He doesn't need to practice a smile in the mirror or figure out a single thing ahead of time. I make every call for him, where to put his hands, how to stand, when to move, so that being photographed stops feeling like work and he can actually relax into it. I watch the small stuff too, the stray hair and the crooked collar, so his only job is to show up. What you get back is him, not a posed version of him.

Parents, here's something worth knowing before your senior books.

Those heavy trendy filters everyone's using right now don't age well. In a few years the skin looks orange, the colors go muddy, and the photos you paid good money for start to look dated before your senior even finishes their first year of college.

Here's what's easy to miss in the moment. This is likely the last time your kid sits for formal portraits before they're out the door and grown. If a trendy filter smooths away their real features and their real coloring, the person you actually raised gets lost in the edit, and that's the one thing you can't reshoot later.

That's exactly why I edit the way I do. Bold, true to color, every image tuned by hand so your senior's own skin tone and their own smile come through instead of a one-size-fits-all preset. The greens, the blues, the outfit you helped pick out, all of it stays true to how it looked that day. And bold never means oversaturated here. It means true to life, so the photos hold up for decades while the trend of the moment does not.
