…on the blacktop, I gotta go that away but he’s going that way…so, yup, stop and neither one get run over. He’s a good one pawpaw, but doesn’t stay around long. He’s smart and will become a local big timer.

Warm morning sun and late morning naps, icatch this feller napping out in the short grass. He wasn’t very happy about it and then turns to find more company. Another napping buck comes out to join him, I guess being territorial. They both forget about me as they just walk circles around each other for a good 10 minutes. It was a strange meeting, neither wanting to tip the cart but just making sure each knew where the line in the sand was.

…I crept through to the other side of the hedgerow and busted him coming through. We looked at each other and he and I knew this meeting had run its course and time to adjourn. He busted out and gave me some flying reindeer moves and I just stood there so fulfilled, what a great buck!

… we hang out for a few minutes, respecting our distance. I spoke to him kindly and he sniffed and vocalized a little bit. We understood each other in kindness and both in awe. I’d like to think he was in awe, but probably more in embarrassment as a buck like this don’t hang out with bros in the road.
He politely sent body language that told me he was going to move on and that our meeting was about done.
He wanders off into the thickets and then I see an opportunity… if I can head west about 50 paces I might catch him on the other side…or he’s gonna blow out of here….

…he stepped out into the clearing, and I got out and leaned on the gate. I’m only at 30 yards, and he’s chill. What a beautiful creature, sneaking around in this dark and quiet bottom. He can hear my heart pounding and the click of my camera…

Right place, right time…as I just happened to make a turn in a deep quiet bend in the road, icatch an ear twitch, then two. This magnificent creature steps out when I feel the need to pause. I played my gut right and he is gorgeous.
We both pause in surprise and I cut the motor to see what’s gonna happen…

…running across the open meadow, he slows down by the timber. I call at him and he slows down interested in what spooked him to start with. Going away exposes that big boxy frame and thick tines. This is a magnificent Kansas buck…maybe I can get him to look back…

…he moved out of the tree line and back into a little creek draw, I knew where he has heading, so walked 50 yards due north to intercept. He stepped out of the bottoms and crossed the road, meeting him at 30 feet, he paused. We nodded at each other and he continued on, no throwing of a flag, no snort, just a silent passing by this morning. Man it was cool.
