I could spend the rest of my entire life photographing Island Beach State Park, and it would be an honor and highlight for me to do so.

Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher

These guys! They are extremely noisy, extremely busy, and extremely inquisitive. But as a bird photographer, they do not sit still long enough for decent shots, and they hang on the edges of thickets or way up in the canopy, so we use the term: "spray and pray." Meaning, hold the shutter down (spray) until you have to wait for your memory card to buffer. Then (pray) you have a decent shot. This was my best shot out of the 15 I took spraying and praying.

Yellow-Rumped Warbler (Myrtle)

When I bird, I always make a pact with myself. That pact is: Not to photograph birds that I can photograph easily in my yard.

This photo is an exception for a couple of reasons.
1. There were 2 Yellow-Throated Warblers flying in the flock of the Yellow Rumped that kept landing on this branch.
2. I liked the over all scene for this photo, and I could not get a clear and clean photo of a Yellow Throated, which has become this year's nemesis bird for me so far.

Also, for clarification, Myrtle Yellow Rumped Warblers have white throats, and the Audobon Yellow Rumped Warblers have Yellow on their throats.

⚠️ New Species Alert ⚠️

Brown Thrasher

What are the odds?
While photographing the "well versed" Northern Mockingbird on Wednesday, I scared off a Brown Thrasher who was literally about 20 feet away in this thicket.
When I returned the following day, the Mockingbird was still doing its thing on the top of its Pitch pine, and the Brown Thrasher was still there as well, just long enough for a picture or two.
The Brown Thrasher has been sort of a nemesis bird for me, as they are very reclusive, and rarely show themselves like this.

⚠️ New Species Alert ⚠️

Northern Mockingbird.

For clarification, I have seen hundreds of Mockingbirds in my lifetime, but this is the first one I have successfully photographed.
This particular Mockingbird has an imitation list to die for, including many life birds for me.
They include:
Blackburnian Warbler, American Pipit, Hudsonian Godwit, Yellow-Headed Blackbird, Bobolink, Snow Bunting, Alder Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, all of which kept showing up regularly on Merlin, which was driving me crazy, until I spotted him perched on top of this Scrub Pine. Throw in a squeaky gate as one of his calls as well.

I was able to walk most of the Bayside during low tide, and saw this NJ State Park, Division of Parks and Forestry can lying on the sand, and thought it would make a cool photo.

It's not a stick-up! It's just a Common Yellowthroat! They are generally the first Warblers to arrive in the spring, and they are very noisy in the thickets. Ask any birder, a clear shot of one these extremely fidgety Warblers is a difficult task. But they are cute with their masks!

Wednesday April 29, 2026

My first birding stop this morning, directly across from where I photographed the sunrise. Even the Bayside was picking up color.

Editor's note:
Who ever thought it was a great idea to put down about a half an inch of shells for the first 1000 feet of this trail, ruined the birding experience. It is almost impossible to walk without making a ton of racket, birders need stealth, especially to photograph.

I did manage an Orchard Oriole for photos, after the shell ruckus ends halfway to the Bay. Binoculars: Eastern Kingbird, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Black-Throated Green Warbler, and a Magnolia Warbler, all half way to the Bay, on the normal trail.

⚠️New Species Alert ⚠️

Meet the Barn Swallow. Resting on this lone branch during the rain.

Editor's note: I have seen thousands of Barn Swallows, but never have successfully photographed one clearly, hence the new species alert.
