I had hoped moving to digital would make my posts a little more timely, but that hasn't been the case. . . Here is a quick trip to the beach about a month ago, just as the remnants of Michael went through.

More digital fun, taken while running at Bent Creek before work last week. I'll admit this probably wouldn't exist with film - dim light, no tripod, ISO 50 and a camera with no VR would have made a sharp image pretty unlikely. This was the only one of about twelve frames where the geese on the water and the ospreys (?) in the sky (barely visible at screen resolution) were all well-positioned.

Well, the unthinkable has finally happened: I've switched from film to digital for my landscape and outdoor work. Here a...

Well, the unthinkable has finally happened: I've switched from film to digital for my landscape and outdoor work. Here are a few highlights from Saturday morning's sunrise jaunt in the Craggy Mountains.

The Appalachian Trail Written by Brian King and Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Foreword by Bill Bryson - Rizzoli New York - Rizzoli New York

I was fortunate enough to have about 30 pictures in the ATC's Appalachian Trail book that came out a few years ago. If you still need a gift for anyone remotely interested in the Trail, the publishers did a great job with this book:

http://www.rizzoliusa.com/book.php?isbn=9780847839032

If that's too specific, Rizzoli did a similar book on trails around the world this past year, with about four of my pictures. It's also fantastic, and I guarantee it will show you places you've never associated with hiking:

http://www.rizzoliusa.com/book.php?isbn=9780847860937

And finally, if you're looking for something a little less expensive, a beautiful AT calendar is only $14.99 (one picture in this one):

Happy holidays!

The only illustrated book officially published with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, The Appalachian Trail explores this legendary footpath in detail: with a foreword by Bill Bryson and filled with more than 300 spectacular contemporary images, as well as unpublished historical photos, documents,...

A bit of a retrospective. I got serious about photography in 1990 when I switched from negative to slide film. The results were much more direct, with little room for error but a lot more creative control. Now after a quarter century, I thought it might be fun to look back, one picture each year, along with a little commentary.

Opening most of Big Ivy to the possibility of logging has rightfully proven to be one of the Forest Service's most unpopular decisions of late. There are many areas in WNC more suitable for sustainable timber production and the creation of habitat for deer, grouse, and other species that thrive in fields and edges. What we have precious little of are large tracts of old-growth interior forests that Big Ivy is well on its way to developing, if left alone (thousands of acres already qualify as 'old-growth'). The Forest Service has shown itself responsive to public input in the past, so participation in the planning process is critical to protecting the wild character of this area. Polite but heartfelt comments can be emailed to [email protected].

This was taken at Bent Creek about this time last year, at the tail end of a day that was drizzly and miserable enough that I left the camera in the car and figured I'd just run a loop for exercise and get it over with. Of course I rounded a bend and found this beech tree glowing like an apparition in the otherwise barren cove, and going back to the parking lot for the camera added a couple unwanted miles to the day's total. Lesson learned...this isn't the greatest picture in the world or anything, but in the dozens of times I've passed this spot it's never looked as good as it did in these crummy conditions.

Here's a favorite spot along the Pine Tree Trail at Bent Creek - favorite, primarily, because it comes with a convenient log on which to set a tabletop tripod. It's inadvertently provided a great example of how the same scene never looks the same twice (no idea what happened to the fallen tree in #4, but it's not there now...)

The website got a bit of a tweak this winter, with some new images and better scans of the old. There's also a new gallery for the central states, making room for a couple of recent trips to the Ozarks and upper Midwest. Great destinations, and often overlooked!

Garren Creek Photography offers stock images and prints of landscape, travel, and nature subjects, with an emphasis on the southern Appalachian mountains.
