Uber Backseat Stories | Chapter Three: Negga
This is Negga, from Ethiopia. For the past three months, he has been one of my "long-haul" drivers, often the one taking me out to the Doyle construction sites where I work on photo and video assignments for my internship. Like Joao, whose story I shared earlier, Negga carries with him a quiet determination and a dream.
Negga is a quiet man, grounded and steady. But behind the wheel, he carries a dream that stretches far beyond traffic lights and highways. His plan for the future is simple, yet extraordinary: when he retires, he wants to spend the rest of his life traveling and photographing the world and nature!
He is already preparing for it. Recently, Negga bought himself a Canon EOS R, not just any camera, but one that allows him to dive into the full craft of photography. To him, real photography means understanding the manual settings, knowing how to shape light, exposure, and depth with your own hands. “If you don’t adjust the settings yourself,” he told me, “you don’t really know photography. You’re not in control of the picture you’re making.”
He’s all in: he plans to enroll in photography classes at Montgomery College and spends most of his free time watching YouTube tutorials, eager to master his camera one click at a time.
What struck me most was not just his ambition, but the purity of it. At a time in life when most people think about slowing down, Negga is dreaming of beginnings, of learning, creating, and seeing the world through a lens.
It was unexpected, and beautiful, to realize how photography, this craft of freezing light and time, can ignite such passion in someone at this age. It's a reminder for the rest of us that it is never too late to start. All you have to do is just start working for that next big step, your passion, and your dream.
More than a ride.
