While many find these birds ugly, the turkey vulture is nature's clean-up crew and plays an important role in our ecosystem.

Why so important, you may ask? The acid in their stomach is so strong that it allows them to safely digest infected carrion. Deadly pathogens that harm many other animals, like anthrax, botulism, rabies, and tuberculosis, stand no chance.

Another interesting fact: Turkey vultures have 2 main defense mechanisms. The first is vomiting, which allows them to lose weight quickly and irritates the predator attacking them. Their second (if the vomiting doesn't work) is to play dead.
