“Crimson Oculus”

When I first realized how vibrant the yellow-crowned night heron’s red eyes are, it really blew my mind!

The little details that you don’t necessarily notice with your naked eye really become apparent when frozen in time with the zoom lens (this was taken with my 70-200) - These details are one thing that really attracts me to wildlife photography. You start to learn a ton about the subtle beauty that is abundant all around us!

📷 My gear: Nikon d3s + 70-200 nikkor
⚙️ Settings: ISO 1000 f2.8 1/1000s 200mm

“Apex”

Of all the amazing creatures that live in Virginia, bald eagles are one of my absolute favorites! Their power and agility are truly remarkable to observe!

With my current camera set up, they are super tricky to capture! So here’s my best attempt after a zillion attempts to catch them at just the right time as they flew overhead!

It’s such an honor to share a home with these beautiful apex predators 🦅

“Nyctanassa violacea”

This yellow-crowned night heron posed under the dock as I returned to the kayak launch one summer afternoon.

What I love most about this photo is that the scene looks just like a watercolor due to the reflection and shallow depth of field from the lens!

“Henry’s Solitude”

In this peaceful riverside scene, a young blue heron named Henry is caught in a moment of quiet reflection. The cloudy day enhances his iridescent blue feathers, creating a striking contrast against the lush greenery. The clouds literally act as a giant soft box on days like this and make the colors pop so nicely!

Initially, Henry’s clumsy movements were concerning to me, but I soon realized he was eagerly learning to hunt!

Unseen in the photo, high above in a massive pine tree, his siblings kept a watchful eye. Also hidden from view was a bald eagle’s nest in a neighboring tree, adding a hidden layer of tension to the scene.

Reflecting on this moment, I often find myself wondering how Henry has been doing since that day...

“Keeper of the Wetlands”

As I glided through the waters of the Hampton River in August, my kayak’s path crossed with a great blue heron among the grasses. The heron stood tall and undisturbed, a solitary figure against the late summer greenery.

With each paddle, I moved quietly, mindful not to disturb the heron’s peaceful domain. As I passed by, I was able to swiftly get this shot with my 200mm lens! 📷

Fleeting connections with wildlife such as this really make me miss kayak adventures during the warmer months!

“Hot Pursuit”

Haven’t shared any photography in a while, so I wanted to show y’all one of my favorite wildlife shots from 2023!

In the early spring time, I peered into the sky over the Hampton river to see an osprey and a bald eagle battling over a fish! This hot pursuit lasted several minutes only to end with the fish tumbling back into the abyss!

This is a little preview of the new prints I’ll be dropping next Saturday. It will be an edition of 10 and once gone, they’ll be gone forever! Last ones sold out quick!

“Blue Ridge State of Mind” 💙

For anyone wondering, this was not edited and the colors are straight out of the camera!

The Blue Ridge Mountains appear blue from a distance due to the scattering of sunlight. The dense forests and the volatile organic compounds released by the trees release hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. When sunlight passes through this haze, shorter wavelengths (like blue and violet) are scattered more than longer wavelengths, making the mountains appear bluish from a distance. This phenomenon is known as "Rayleigh scattering."
