The 11th annual run/walk in honor of PFC Shane Cantu was held this morning in Owosso. Cantu, who was from Corunna, was killed in action Aug. 28, 2012, in Afghanistan.

Participating in this year’s 5K was Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is running for governor and has participated in the event every year. Benson’s husband served with Cantu.

Long before Jocelyn Benson became Michigan's secretary of state or a candidate for governor, she began making an annual trip to Owosso to remember a fallen soldier who served alongside her husband.

Army Pfc. Shane Cantu was 20 years old when he was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 28, 2012.

The 2010 Corunna High School graduate was stationed with the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy. He had been deployed to Afghanistan only a few weeks before his death.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, Benson, her husband Ryan Friedrichs, and their 10-year-old son Aiden, participated in the 11th annual Campaign for Shane 5K in honor of Cantu.

Friedrichs enlisted in January 2011 and served as a sergeant in the Airborne Brigade. He deployed to Afghanistan with Cantu in 2012.
