I hope you let them..
When your daughter asks to pet the pony, I hope you let her. I hope when your teenager asks to try a different 4H project, that you let them. I hope when your child is picking out colleges and they say they want to take something in Agriculture, that you encourage them..
Maybe it's just going to be another project you will be working on. Or maybe you're too tired to go halter the pony after working all day. Because same.
But, if we don't let kids experience this stuff, who will? We know the truth, that ranching & farming isn't easy. I get that it's easier to avoid the extra hassle of 4-H projects, another horse or another bottle calf. However, I think it is of the upmost importance to speak well about Agriculture to these kids. I'm not saying to leave out the realistic stuff, the things that make it difficult. But certainly don't tell them to stay away from those cattle, or not to pursue a degree in Animal Science. If we can be realistic we can also romanticize all the great things about what we do.
If we don't foster our children's love for one of the most beautiful ways to live - they may never choose to be in Agriculture after us. And what they'll miss is what hay smells like when it's ready to be cut. They'll miss what it feels like to save a calf and watch it thrive despite all odds. They may not learn that when a job needs done, you have to be there to finish it no matter how tired, cold or hungry you may be. Most importantly if we don't involve them now, they may not want to carry this on.
The industry needs our kids to be here on the ranch running cows, no matter the size of the herd. The industry has to have the next generation of kids sitting in a planter. I believe it is imperative that all sizes of operations continue to conduct business in a free market. If we don't continue to keep operating within the family, these farms and ranches may end up in the hands of corporations or worse.. turned over to the government.
I believe we tend to get lost in focusing on hardships, or the challenging years and we forget this can be done. Ranching & farming has been done before us, and I want to make it sure it will get done after us. That starts at home, with our kids. So, I hope you'll let them carry those buckets and run that tractor because the future depends on it.
