Iron on! YouTuber Jack Pembrook came up to Washington to visit me a few weeks ago and we went extreme ironing for his YouTube channel. Jack and his cameraman Owen were absolute troopers - despite never having rock climbed before, they both rose to the occasion and we got the footage they were after! Nicest guys in the world too, and I had a blast working with them!

Big thanks too to my assistants Brian and Jon, as well as Nick from who was our safety guide for the day and did a phenomenal job with the rigging for the ironing board.

Jack just dropped a video on his channel where you can see him try extreme ironing with me as well as several other unusual hobbies. I'll post the link in the comments - give it a watch!

I'm saddened to hear about the wildfires that have reached the town of Jasper. My family and I had the opportunity to visit several years ago and really enjoyed our visit to this special place. We were even treated to a wonderful aurora show, seen here over the Fairmont.

I hope everyone in Jasper is safe, and that Jasper will be able to get back on its feet soon!

From this morning's photo walk with my kids. I carried the R5 + 100-500 and they carried their Instax Minis. They did a great job too!

Friday Night Lights

The aurora show on Friday night was incredible! So many different things made it unique. The variety of colors, including yellow, which is quite rare. The corona overhead all night. The aurora visible to the naked eye from my driveway, and from my car driving on I5 through Everett.

All that is great, but two things stick out for me. First, how many people got to see it! I've been incredibly fortunate to be able to see and photograph the aurora dozens of times in many places around the world. But many of the people who filled my feed with aurora pics on Saturday had never seen it, and outside of Friday, may never get another opportunity to see it. Aurora hunting usually requires a combination of conditions, luck, effort, and patience, and for many people the payoff isn't worth it. But it's incredible to think that people were able to step out into their driveways with their family and see it. I love that!

The other thing that sticks out for me was after I got home from chasing. I had family stuff on Saturday so I got home about 1:15am, and went to wake up my 6 year old son. He was SO EXCITED to go out and see it, and still hasn't stopped talking about it. I took some pictures of him smiling in front of our house with the aurora in the background. That might be my favorite image of the aurora I've ever taken!

As far as the storm itself, this was the largest storm since October of 2003. The world was a lot different 20 years ago. I remember looking at the forecast on my computer at home, and then driving for a few hours hoping to see it. No cellphones then, so I had no idea what the aurora was doing, what others were seeing, and so forth. I managed to see a bright green ribbon from I5 in Everett again, but otherwise wasn't very successful. I didn't even know what I was looking for or how to spot aurora with the naked eye before letting my eyes adapt, and I didn't have camera with me at all. It's fun to think how much the world - and I - have changed!

Lava fountains erupting this morning in Iceland on the Reykjanes peninsula from the Sundhnúksgígar crater row.

I'm sitting in the airport in Keflavik, about to head back to Seattle, and looking at images and still trying to process this whole experience. We were woken up at 6am by the volcano siren going off, which meant it was time to evacuate. Our hotel was the closest hotel to the volcano - about 2km or so. We quickly gathered our things and left to find a new place to shoot from!

I shot this image at 70mm from the moving car of the lava fountains along road 43. This was very early in the eruption, maybe 6:30am, so the fountains were just getting going. Nevertheless, they were 50m-80m tall at times. An incredible sight.

I have many more pictures from very close to the volcano to edit soon!

Are you ready for the 2024 Milky Way season? My 2024 Milky Way Trip Planner is out now, and you can get started today planning your trips during the best times to shoot the Milky Way. My opinionated planner helps you get an idea of what to shoot when, and you can even import the important shooting windows into your calendar. The link is in the comments, but if you are on my mailing list, you should have it in your inbox too!

About the image: I don't think there are enough black and white Milky Way, aurora, or any other night sky images out there. I really like this one, from Mt. Rainier this summer. I think the black and white makes the rocks stand out. What do you think?
