Journeys I. Part of a series of altered Polaroid images that were showing at Aurora Gallery in August. The print is exposed to the elements for a period of time so the image undertakes its own journey to becoming. I love the raw and unpredictable effects that result from this process.

I'm so pleased to be a part of the Analog Forever show, an exhibition of film and analog photography, at Lightbox Gallery in Astoria. The show opens today and runs through October 5. It's sure to be a really interesting show that explores the roots and boundaries of photography. This is a tricolor cyanotype, printed in three layers to achieve a broader color palette. Cyanotype is both incredibly simple and maddeningly finicky, and creating a tricolor image is exponentially so. I used madder root to tone the reds, bleached the yellow layer, and finally printed the blue layer on top. This is an image I chose from a project called How We Remember, which explores the artifacts and totems people choose to memorialize ones they've lost.

Cedrus, from the Understory project.

Cedrus. The mighty cedar. Cedar trees symbolize immortality, purity, and protection. They are sacred in cultures and faiths across the globe, used for protection against negative energies, meditation, and amulets and talismans. A tree like the cedar has been growing around the northwest for as long as 50 million years.

This cedar bough reaches from the haze of its past into a slice of sunlight that traveled 93 million miles.

Nova, from the Understory project.

A nova is a sudden, short-lived explosion from a collapsed star. Novas increase in luminosity by thousands to hundreds of thousands of times their normal brightness before they fade back to dormancy. This cycle of life unfolds from the most delicate flower in the forest to the brightest star in the sky.

I’m really excited to have a small show in August at Aurora Gallery in downtown Vancouver. These three pieces are part of my Journeys project. They are archival prints of altered Polaroids, an unpredictable process which creates images of great depth and interest.

The show will open at First Friday on August 3. Make a full day of it, catch the Vancouver USA Arts & Music Festival at Esther Short Park and then stroll over to First Friday to visit the galleries !

The Journeys project uses instant photography to explore how time and environment transform our journey. As each Polaroid image ages and interacts with its environment, it evolves, revealing new layers and stories. Each piece is a testament to the power of time and transformation, and I hope they inspire you to appreciate the subtle and imperfect beauty of your own journey.

These are 12x12+” prints on 13x 19 Palo Duro photographic paper. I recommend these fine art prints be preserved and protected with archival mounting and framing under glass. Aurora Gallery can take care of that with top quality framing right there in the gallery!

Nebula from the Understory project.

A nebula is gas and dust in space that can be the explosion of a dying star or a new star beginning to form. The end and the beginning are the same. Some nebulae are called star nurseries. Imagine that for a moment. Nebula is also the Latin root for nebulous -- vague, indistinct, or confused.

In photography, bokeh -- those unfocused orbs of light -- are also called circles of confusion. Usually, bokeh are simply blurred circles of light, but in this image, each one holds the reflected image of the world around it.

The gasses and dust of a nebula are drawn together into clumps by gravity. As the clumps get larger the gravity gets stronger until it collapses from its own gravity. And finally, a new star begins to form from its core.
