Why you need a birth doula:)

I will start off by saying that, well, I'm biased because I am a doula, for 22 years now. I had doulas at both of my births. I see first hand, whether I'm doulatog or birth photographer, how it can make a tremendous difference in the outcome.

Doulas will be there for you to help you plan and guide you through your pregnancy and in the most challenging times. But it's you, the birthing mom, that has to go through the work and into the birth portal into motherhood. It's you who has to make that decision in your body and in your mind. To surrender to the power of birth.

But here are some benefits that have been proven when doulas are by your side and part of your birth team and birth village:
•they can be with you at home supporting you in labor before you go to the hospital or birth center- AND prevent you from going too early; if you are having a home birth, they are usually the ones there first to help you before the rest of the team arrives.
•reduced rates of c-sections, reduced use of Pitocin, and reduced need for pain medication
•fewer assisted births (vacuum or forecep-forcep is very rare these days)
•they are with you continuously through the labor and birth. You may have different nurses rotating in and out depending on how long you are there. And usually the doctor comes in right when baby is being born and then leave shortly after.
•they help assist your partner-they don't replace but they often help support them with giving them breaks and also showing how to support you as well
•emotional support and reducing stress and elevating the overall environment and experience.
•with or without pain medication they use massage techniques, breathing, and position changes- and highly encourage water in labor or aka "hydraepidural"- water is an amazing tool in labor.
The mom in these photos had a doula and me, her photographer, her husband and midwife and had a beautiful non medicated second birth
Reach out to me if you would like to schedule a consult or book me for your birth! I am available for in-person and remote support.

I filmed and edited
interviews for the
re-release of the documentary
The Business of Being Born

It was released 18 years ago, I watched it when I was pregnant and still to this day the film opens people's eyes to the history of and realities of the medical model of birth...and unfortunately it's not getting better. The outcomes are getting worse.

Watch and recommend!

But there's a story behind everything. How a picture got on a wall. How a scar got on your face. Sometimes the stories are simple, and sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is always your mother's story, because hers is where yours begin.

Watching big siblings meet their newest little sibling for the first time is up there at the top on the list of "best moments to watch in life." The reactions and the look on their faces is priceless.
