Just light, a moment, a wisp of hair - throw in a little lens flare and I love the result. Shot on the beach in San Francisco, she borrowed the board from a friend, but held it like it was her own.

Remember the movie Concussion with Will Smith about a forensic pathologist who went up against the NFL? He had discovered CTS - brain injuries from impacts. This is that guy, Dr. Bennet Omalu. Horrible story about how the NFL basically ran him out of town, forcing him to move across the country and find a position in a small town as a medical examiner. But then, years later, his discoveries are adopted, and helmet technology changes. This guy could not have been a sweeter person to photograph, such a kind warm soul.

This image always bring me back to the crazy dot-com days of 1999/2000. Almost every magazine job I did was with a computer related business that was just starting out. In 2000 I averaged over 4.5 shoots a week, and since I tried to take Wednesdays off, that meant I did at least one double a week. This guy worked for LookSmart, anyone remember them? Before Google became ubiquitous there was Yahoo!, Excite and LookSmart - the latter ostensibly reviewing the sites they recommended with real people. Imagine that, search results that were verified by humans. Every time LookSmart hired someone new, which was almost twice a month, they had me come by, late in the afternoon to shoot executive portraits. With a backdoor on South Park into their offices, we could park and set up in 15 minutes. This guy was an evangelist of some kind for LookSmart, but also a comedian, and he arrived to the shoot looking just like this. Shot on Kodak chrome film on a Hasselblad with an 80mm lens.

Also shot for Title Nine, aside from working with a beautiful model, in a beautiful boathouse, I just love the light and the simplicity of the gesture.

I love the light in this gym. However, it's the slight motion in the kettlebells from shooting at 1/160th contrasting with how sharp her face is, that is the reason I love this image.

I'm in Moab, on a river, on a paddleboat, $7000 worth of gear in one hand. I paddle her out to this overhang. Then with a super fast moving current, I have to steady the paddle-board for me and for her, and to shoot this cover image. What happens if you fall in? Just not an option, not going to happen.

In 2014 I had my elbow repaired - a ligament had severed leaving my forearm muscle detached. Just a few days post surgery I was photographing a campaign for Title Nine, but I couldn't use my right hand. The elbow was locked in this contraption at 90 degrees. For some shots I composed with my left and yelled to my assistant to press the button; for others I was able to use this long cable release as I held the camera with my left.

I go up the elevator of this North Beach (San Francisco) apartment building with an assistant and my usual six cases of gear. 'No, no,' says the economist, Milton Friedman, 'just one person and one camera. You don't need all this'. So, no lights, one body, one lens, 4 rolls of film - I have 30 seconds, decide! My assistant was paid to sit in the hallway for the whole shoot with all my other gear. Shot handheld with a Hasselblad 500 CM and an 80mm lens, this image was made during an interview with a reporter from Der Spiegel.

He told me he came from a long line of witches. That's how we started. I had found him on Craigslist, answering an ad I placed looking for bald people of every skin tone. Before I photographed people undergoing chemo, I wanted to test the lighting scenario on anyone and everyone without hair that I could find - even a young neighbor with Alopecia. I wanted to get the lighting just right before I wasted any opportunity with actual patients.

Definitely one of my favorite portraits of my career - infamous running coach, Jack Daniels. Photographed in the mid 90s in Phoenix, AZ at sunset standing on a track where he had been coaching all day. Shot hand held on a Hasselblad with an 80mm lens, a small soft-box on a strobe powered by a battery that I had just bought. He always wore that hat.
