My task this morning was to return several boxes to the back of the crawl space…. What actually happened was a trip down memory lane and the recognition of heritage (and some very questionable school photos). Among the box of family pictures is a mashup of a formal portrait of my paternal grandmother as a young adult with her 6 siblings and parents and me eating a frozen OJ popsicle. My point? Each photograph tells a story and is a piece of my family puzzle. I am thankful to have these tangible pieces of my past.

While developing film in my darkroom, I found a roll I didn’t recognize. To my surprise, it held images of my wife and our firstborn—taken more than 20 years ago. Seeing those faces again reminded me why portraits matter. Some moments only reveal their true value with time.
