Slow down, see and experience. These are words that I’m working to apply to my daily life. Life is moving so quickly and it seems that the things that the world wants you to see and focus on push you to buy stuff and to divide us all. No thank you.
This is a moment of El Mirage sunrise magic. Driving to the SCTA course in 2022 at sunrise I saw this moment and had to stop and spend a few minutes just to see and feel the moment. There were no engines running, no cars flying by, no “influencers” flogging products and absolutely no stress whatsoever.
This photograph won’t get much attention and that’s too bad. Not because it’s my photograph and that it’s pretty special to me, but because so many of us have forgotten how to slow down, see and experience the amazing people and moments that are still happening all around us. Social media is not reality.
Those of you that have experienced a sunrise at El Mirage can probably imagine this moment. The beautiful silence. The smell of the morning air. The morning light gently painting the mountains and lake bed in slow motion. This is the magic of life.
Don’t miss the next SCTA meet and the magic of El Mirage at the SCTA Season Opener on May 16th & 17th, 2026.

I don’t shoot color film often but when I do it’s because of moments like this. Sunrise at El Mirage and the coolest Tudor you’ll ever see. Kodak film and Hasselblad for the magic combo.

I had to walk away from editing yesterday because I obsess. I can spend hours and hours tearing apart a single image looking for ways that it can be better. One of the ways my ADHD exhibits is perfectionism. This can make it really difficult to ever get any work done or to ever be satisfied with my work. When I walked away from my desk yesterday this image was on my screen and I didn’t think much about it. The rest of the evening, every time I walked anywhere near where I could see my screen this image kept catching my attention and the obsession began. It took me a while to fall in love with it but it finally caught hold of my imagination and I dodged and burned until I was finally satisfied. There’s no AI, no filters, no fakery here. If I’m 100% honest it’s a lot of luck and just being in the right place at the right time – another gift from the photo gods. You should see this photograph printed large. Damn it it’s cool. 😎

Movement, speed, action, tension – all elements of a successful motorsport photograph to me. Never easy to get everything right and a lot of luck involved but it sure feels good when it all comes together! New story coming on my Patreon site (www.patreon.com/scottphotoco) about how I make photographs like this. Please join me there! Huge thanks to for setting up this really cool day in Riverside, CA. Happy birthday, Ken.

There are a lot of us that miss this man – but the memories that we have are priceless. This is from the last trip he made to Speed Week in 2022 and I had the pleasure of photographing the crazy, fun s**t that we got to do because the salt flats flooded so other shenanigans had to be found. Here he is in his happy place surrounded by hot rods and friends and where I will remember him forever. More at https://www.scottphoto.co/ken-schmidt. LINK IN BIO

When I’m working on a story I try to have in my mind what the different elements can look like in the completed story. Of course, this always includes a cover (even if I have not been hired for or guaranteed a cover). As I have been an art director for much of my career I sometimes make a mock-up of what a cover could look like just to keep me excited as I work through the many, many hours that it takes to complete a story like this. In 2022 I was working on a story for Hot Rod Magazine about Lucky Burton’s 523 car at Bonneville. I photographed the car on the salt the day before major rain storm passed through and completely flooded the “dry” lake bed and forced the cancelation of Speed Week. Well, needless to say, I didn’t get a print cover but the story did run in full for Hot Rod Magazine at https://www.hotrod.com/features/land-speed-racing-1931-ford-coupe (LINK IN BIO). I came across this the other day so I thought that I’d share it with you, just because. A huge thanks to John McGann and Lucky Burton for this opportunity! PHOTOS PART 2: I love the Barona track. It’s well loved. It has few of the “modern conveniences”. It’s a little of the beatin’ path. You can feel the history here. It’s perfect. Gatherings here feel like a family gathering in my youth. The bitchin` hot rods and the people just make it feel right. If you haven’t been yet you should go before all of this cool stuff finally dissappears from modern culture as we know it. This weekend, Saturday and Sunday April 18th and 19th, 2026 The RPM Barona Drags and Antique Nationals are throwing a hot rod party. Let’s support this event and really experience hot rodding, racing and family the way it should be.
I plan to drive “Buscemi”, my ’64 Econoline down for this weekend. This is my first longer trip with the new engine and driveline since I put it in. With my mechanic skills I am really hoping that I’ll make it but I’m certainly going to try. If all goes well I’ll camp in the van on Saturday night so that I can be there for both days to tell the story of this event from the inside. Fingers and toes crossed.

Buscemi (van) Update!

After much fear, trepidation and over-planning there is an entire new driveline in the van. The rebuilt unicorn 1964 4-main, 7 plug 200 I6 (IYKYK), rebuilt stock 3-speed trans and new clutch are all installed. Unfortunately, I must have done something wrong when we put this in as I just cannot seem to get this to run as she should. The timing can’t be set correctly without the engine shutting down and with the timing advanced enough to overcome this is just runs rough and unhappily. To me, it feels like I have a vacuum leak somewhere that’s completely evading me as I have searched and searched. Under the gun here as I really hope to make the trip out to RPM/Barona/ Antique Nationals next weekend. This is the joy and frustration of not really knowing what you’re doing and learning along the way. Back to some basics as I continue my hunt for issues later today. I will overcome! 🤔
